Honours at uni is basically, when you've achieved a certain GPA or C average you can apply do an an honours year. It generally involves doing research and writing a thesis (for most subjects)

Depends though, what degree are you looking at>?

It also allows you to use the pre-nominal title "The Honourable".

Honours differs from faculty to faculty.

In the more traditional areas like science and arts, you have to spend an extra year at uni doing research and post graduate courses to graduate with honours. Generally, if you want to do a Phd you have to do honours first.

In some other faculties honours just means that you have a high WAM across all your courses - a bit like getting a premier's award in the HSC, I guess.

The difference it would have is instead of a B Commerce, you have a B Commerce (Honours), which normally involves staying an extra year at uni doing a research thesis (depending on the uni/field/etc). Also, depending on whether you get first class honours, second class honours etc, its a nice boost on your resume to show that you were in the top 10% or 15% of your class/year.

Yes it is a better qualification, but depending on your field, it may not be necessary. An Honours (first class, sometimes second class) also allows you to skip a Masters to go striaght into a PHD.

Yeah I know that in Science degrees especially, most research jobs (because it's so competitive) require Honours.

Yes it is. I know the RBA doesn't take in people without hons. That's if you want to major in economics...

Does he need to worry about honours right now?

Its at the end of his degree. He doesn't even know his subject WAM's or anything, let alone completed a subject

Put simply - an extra year of relatively unsupervised study - either a research project or thesis (x thousand word essay/document) is produced at the end of the year.

Allows you to put Hons in your title i.e. Bachelor of Science (Hons)

x can be anything from 11,000 words up, but from my understanding they are usually 20k words (people feel free to correct me if you're doing otherwise)
