What is wrong with me? (1 Viewer)

Throughout all of high school I have received good marks in every subject.
I can easily do what most students find hard to comprehend.

Studies of Religion is such an easy course in my eyes.

Yet...

I ALWAYS GET BAD MARKS!

It is my worst subject and I have no idea why! Every time I hand in an assessment or walk out of an exam, I feel awesome about myself, 100% sure that I did a good job and that I'll get a good mark.

And then I get my assessment/exam back... And I feel like crying...

So, my marks arent THAT bad, but I NEED to be first in the class or I feel like a failure.

I recently got 17/25 for an assessment, and 27/35 for an exam.

This furiated me, especially when I spent so much time studying.

What annoys me more is that I read my friends' exams, and they've written worse answers than mine, but they get better marks.

I have discussed this with my teacher but she seems to always be able to point out my many faults.

Can anyone offer me some advice? This course Isnt really that hard, so WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME???!!!

Depends on what the teacher says your faults are? Can you perhaps point me in the right direction and I might be able to give you a hand working out what it is you need to do to fix them.

I guess what seems to happen is that I know the content, I just can't apply it. The thing I dont understand is that I can do this in other subjects??

Another thing is, I'm not really specific..I dont know, to me, religion shouldn't be about knowing dates anyway (one of the multiple choice questions I got wrong asked what year the Tent Embassy was set up)...

Plus, most of the things we get asked I feel like we didn't really learn about in class... I do try, very hard, but it never pays off...

I guess one thing to do, then, is start looking at Studies of Religion as another history subject. Part of studying Religions like is knowing the history of their formation.

It seems to me that some of the course work is about using the information you are given and using that in a new format or applying it to a new situation. Perhaps, if you get a question that seems like a curve ball, try and swing it back to what you know and apply that to the topic.

It is hard for me to be specific not knowing your full situation. But if you can do it in other subjects it could be that perhaps you need to look at this subject in a different way and things may slot into place.

That was probably no help at all.

I know this may sound harsh but Im guessing you want honesty and as I say at the end, I dont know you or your standard of work so I can be a bastard!!

To be honest, it sounds like you are setting the bar too high and over-estimating your ability Vs what you can actually do.

I have known many students who approach this subject as if its the easiest thing ever and that is their downfall...they dont treat it seriously (or they over-estimate their ability in relation to what is actually required.)

Am willing to look at your work if you also hand over a marking criteria and Ill give you an honest answer. (have taught the subject for 12 years and have HSC marked so I think I know a little about the course and whats required!)

You should listen to your teacher...what is she saying that yo are doing wrong?
Maybe (just maybe) you can turn what she is saying into a positive and make your life easier!

Dont know...hard to give advice without knowing you or how you are working or what you are presenting as (in your opinion) "excellent work"

i was gnna say something on the same lines. a lot of ppl mistakenly believe it's just about generally knowing about the religions/topics.

but for top marks, you do need to treat it with detail and depth. perhaps you're not studying the right things. like alcalder said, it might be useful to treat it like another history subject in terms of the detail, and depth required, and also linking the theory to the practical application - ie what's happening in the world today.

like snapperhead said, its kinda hard to make a judgement, but i personally find, in humanities subjects the best way to "study" or improve is hand stuff in, have it marked, and get feedback. take that feedback away, reread your own work, and try again.

hehe i have a similiar problem with not learning it in class as my techers' teaching style is different from my learning style, look at the syllabis because thats what i have been doing :p
