x800 GTO is somewhat the "economy-class" of the x800s. They're cheaper purely because they're using the left-overs (lower quality) of the x850 or x800 xl chips.

When distributed, the firmware can still be flashed to work as a x800 xl (if the flash is available). It's easily overclockable to an extent of similar performance to the x800 xl.

Get your hands on a GTO, they're significantly cheaper than the XL. Slight tweaking of GTO's performance can be done to match that of XL.

Geez OKAY, most people's monitors can only support up to 1280x1024!

That's American dollars. $US400 video card for us is about $A700-$A800 dollars - with that kind of budget, you'd WANT to be able to afford a 1600x1200 screen or else it's a waste of cash.

Exactly, if you're max resolution was 1280, then you'd just go for, say a 7800GT instead of a GTX, since you can max everything on that res and have smooth gameplay

That's an incorrect comparison, since it's using the ordinary 6800 card, not the 6800 GT as you wanted to compare. I believe the GT is significantly faster than the X800GTO.

Originally the X800PRO was the competitor to the 6800GT. I bought my X800XT in June 04', and I remember all the ATI vs. nVidia fanboys dishing it out against each other around those two cards. Although the XT faught very well against the Ultra, ATi got sliced with the PRO due to the GT retaining the Ultra's 16 pipeline architecture whilst the PROs were cut down to 12. If you read all the XT/PRO/Ultra/GT reviews and benchies around the time, you'd notice that the PRO was always the odd one out.

What a load of crap, I'd need a SLi GTX config to be able to run F.E.A.R @ 16*12, 4xTSAA/6xAF, all settings max @ GOOD frames. $US400 = ~AU$560; if those crazy authors are suggesting I can get such a dual card combo for that price, then it's gotta be the best kept secret in town.

The article is dated December 2004. The games tested there are the latest games available at that time. Then F.E.A.R. came out and ruined all the rules.

Well, if it was 04'.. I'll replace F.E.A.R with Doom 3. US$400 couldn't get ya an Ultra obviously and the GTs sure couldn't run Doom 3 @ 16*12/Ultra at good frames.
