Long term parliamentary survival alone is not enough, you can stay in parliament by populist vote without ever achieving anything.

A party that Keeps the Bastards Honest - and works in the best interests of the nation - as they aren’t big they don't have to worry too much about big business.

While saying that - now that the Australian Democrats are gone it is odd to use their catchline as a reason to define what a successful minor party is but - for their time (other than their support of GST and Cheryl Kernot and Gareth Evens scandal) they were highly successful at Keeping the Bastards Honest.

Today, we have in the Senate the Greens who are doing much the same job as the Democrats did.

You guys might like to have a go at this Easter game - its pretty awesome!! Easter Egg a Bastard:haha:

Is it a willingness to negotiate (effective outcomes) or is it long term parliamentary survival (electoral outcomes)?

Reason for thread - Australian Democrats: The passing of an era.
Interesting question.

I think it would have to be a combination of both, as katie tully said, you can be in parliament for a long time, without actually achieving anything.

So, they should have enough popular support to give them negotiating power, and a willingness to negotiate and work with the larger parties.

There should be no limitations on their aspirations to be a major party in their own right, either.

Negotiating is all well and good but principles need to be stuck to or you risk losing your image (e.g. Democrats).
