I'm trying to remember the name of that school... I heard about it on BoS- apparently they only let the top students sit the HSC and hence they received really good results/ranking this year.

If possible could someone please link me to the news article about it?

Thanks

What did they do if you weren't what they classed as a "top" student? Not allow you to do the HSC?

I think you are talking about the school which only allowed students who receive band 5 or 6 in the SC to go on to do the HSC at the school?

it was that sheik faeh bin laden islamic school.

Apparently they got a really good rank in this year's HSC because of this strategy.. anyone remember it?

Study, study, study along with revision and not seeing the sunlight for at least 2 months in advance of the HSC exams.

I know Malek Fahd Islamic School in Greenacre doesnt let you do the hsc unless you get really high marks, like above 90 and they choose the subject for you. My friend got kicked out of that school at the end of year 11 because she wouldnt pick up physics at the end of year 11 even though she had done the hsc chemistry exam in year 11, which means she would have done 14 units. That school cheats though, they begin the hsc course in like year 9/10. My friend is in year 9 and she is already half way through the biology course!

IF the 'cheat' shouldn't the official BOS know about it since teachers are not allowed to directly teach course material to students before the HSC begins.

It obviously disadvantages other students, stupid. I know I would have liked to study all my subjects since year 9 and so would many others.

Back on topic- can anyone remember the name of that school? I think it started with N?

it was that sheik faeh bin laden islamic school.
Sorry for being a bit ignorant but I'm ASSUMING that isn't the real name of that school- but I do remember that it was a religious school.

I don't think that was the one which got a newspaper article about it- I remember it was one which had a good rank this year or something... because they introduced the policy this year.

Thanks anyway!

wow, that's a bit harsh. um correct me if i am wrong, but isn't it NOT allowed for schools to choose subjects for their students? seems a bit sus there.

By allowing someone to do HSC biology in yr 9, the school is not cheating, its called accelerating. James Ruse has yr 8 students doing HSC courses, one girl from James Ruse has been doing the HSC since yr 8!... BOS wont interfere with something like this.

I think only the extremely intelligent people are the ones who are allowed to do this, however almost everyone does the HSC over 2 yrs, i.e 2-6 units in yr 11, and whats left in yr 12.

A friend of mine did buisness studies and Physics in yr 11, he received a band 6 for buisness.. but didint do too well in physics, so he repeated physics in yr 12... its simply accelerating students, the majority of schools accelerate students!

Now about only allowing the high achievers to continue to yr 11 and 12, well, thats the schools decision, they have the right to make that decision!

although In some cases (like ur friend being forced to take physics)... perhaps it is unfair!

U dont necessarily have to get band 5's and 6's in the SC to stay, if the principle knows ur a consistent students, and have good behaviour, he wont kick u out. Most people who are forced to leave, usualy have a behaviour problem as well (usualy, not always).

EDIT: Is this the article?:

The rapid rise of Malek Fahd Islamic School at Greenacre, which shot to 24th in the state, follows the school's newly introduced policy to allow only high achievers to sit the HSC.

Students outside the top two performance bands in year 10 mathematics, English and science exams must repeat the year or go to another school or TAFE.

It's not the "right" of a comprehensive public school to make this decision.
How can these schools be compared to public schools in the same area?
Exactly what they count on.
Shameless.

Its a private school, I believe it can be selective of the students it wishes to keep, and I also believe they have this "right", there's nothing to say they dont, unless someone can show me otherwise, then I'll stand corrected!

Thanks for the article- I guess I was wrong about the name =]

Anyway, as for only allowing certain students to accelerate- I think it's still unfair in the sense that not all schools permit it and hence there are some people sitting the HSC with much less pressure and the capacity to do more units. Could this be my bitterness regarding not being allowed to accelerate IPT a couple of years ago? Yes. Whilst from one perspective I see the benefits of accelerating students, but then from the other end of the spectrum, they are given an unfair advantage which unless extended to all students; I feel is unfair.

I think earlier in this topic people were also referring to when schools teach students HSC-material (but not the syllabus) earlier on. Whilst this follows the similar problem to advantaging students unfairly, it's hard to differentiate between what is and what isn't acceptable- Even if schools weren't permitted, what's to stop the kids from going to outside tutors and learning ahead? Where does it stop? I remember learning some year11/12 mathematics material earlier on in my high school life because it 'came in handy', but then I didn't sit the HSC exams earlier, and I still had the same level of pressure and time management during the HSC exams.

So what's the best solution to all this? Let students pick their own level of education and speed of learning so they can manage their time and workload? Hypothetically that could lead to James Ruse pumping out high school graduates at the age of 14 before they're mature enough to survive university life. But then, isn't there more to school than getting that 2 digit 2 decimal place number (or 3 digit for a select few?)?
