Hi there. Does anyone know what the general 1st topic/s is/are for 4-unit maths, I mean what do they teach at the very start of the course? What do they then move on to?

I know this may vary from school to school but does anyone have any ideas??

Thanks.

I always hear graphs or complex numbers are the starting topics, they move onto conics but i don't know whether they are taking conics out of the syllabus in place of integral calculus and modelling and some other topic

We did complex numbers first, but I did hear of a school that did another topic first, I think it was graphs...

yeh we did complex numbers first.

And on the first assessment task I got 93% and I was all like, woo I rock at 4u.

And then we got to the other stuff =P

we did complex - its either complex or graphs as everyone above me has pointed out - possibly because they are the first 2 in the textbooks?

lol at the person above me! i did that too!

our second topic was polynomials

Oook. Ive started with complex. It isnt too difficult, but then again, its probably why they choose to do it as a first topic. I noticed I didnt know some of the other stuff in other topics. They needed year twelve - 2 and 3 unit pre-requisites. Complex numbers and polynomials/graphs dont need much.

Thanks.

lol, 'isn't too difficult'.
The theory isn't that difficult, it's just that some of the question they give you can be a bitch if you can't find the shortcut.

basics are easy of course, but wait until you hit vectors or random proofs.

its basically complex usually cause that doesnt require too much stuff from the HSC 3u course. graphs is a possibility, but they'd have to come back to it when you touch on expo and log, trig and inverse trig in 3u

I've done vectors...

What kind of random proofs though?

Depends on the question. :p For all the hard questions, there's always this one thing that ends up making the question easy.

And yeah, I used to play Continuum. :p

it's more so in conjunction with polynomials, you get random shit like prove cos 5pi/9 + cos 7pi/12 = cos pi/9 (this isn't true, just what i could think of at the moment)

Lol those polynomials and complex combined questions are so annoying  , we did complex, integration and then graphs.
