Hi! I'm in year 10 right now, studying at Penrith.

I know that I definitely want to take:
- Maths Advanced (maybe ex1)
- English Advanced (duh)
- Eco
- Business Studies
- Software engineering

But I'm not sure what subject/course to take for another 2 units. Anyone have any recommendations/suggestions or any experiences? I'm not taking any science subjects (like phys, chem, bio, senior science), but any others?

Thanks all

Probably do ITM cause some of my friends did it and it requires a lot of effort, lots of projects but i think it should scale well an can probably serve as a more relaxing subject (kinda) from your usual

Imo there's not one good course in the HSC. What are you interested in and do you have any idea what kind of career path you want to take? Are you prioritising ATAR or actually learning skills? Currently, your lineup seems geared to business or IT, but I wouldn't recommend enterprise computing unless you're really interested in it, since not many people did well in it last year. You've ruled out a lot by not taking science subjects (tbh I think it's good to take at least one science, but you must have you reasons). VET courses like ITM could be good (if your school offers it), especially if you want something more practical, but bear in mind that their ATAR contribution (aka scaling) may be a bit lower, so you'll have to do quite well in it to get to the standard of your other courses.

If you're good at writing, you could look at other HSIE courses like legal studies, modern history, even geography etc. My friends who did these courses found them quite interesting but a bit tedious. You could even look at beginners languages, if that's something you're interested in. They tend to be pretty easy.

Engineering studies is good as long as you get the teacher who can actually teach. (Hint: Not the deputy) If you're considering music, then go for it - its fun and if you know what you're doing, it can boost your ATAR. Biology also isn't too bad - consider it, perhaps.
What do you want to do after school?

if you’re doing math ext 1 then you could do either sor 1 or english ext 1 so it can add up to 12 units (out of those i’d chose sor 1 cus it’s much easier compared to english extension)

I'm looking at a career in computer science, ideally artificial intelligence. Although I'm considering if it's even worth it to take more than 10 units in year 12?

I'm not sure if I've got that teacher at my school, it might not evne be worth the effort considering it's only two units and it's not too related to my ideal career pathway in software engineering (specifically ai). And I'm planning to not take any bio subjects because I'm not really interested in it; I looked through the syllabus and it doesn't really appeal to me and doesn't scale well either from the looks of it.

ideally do maximum 11 units

software engineering and math adv (and some unis require ext) is already good enough, so atp if ur keeping them in y12 u can choose what u want for the remaining 2 units and drop it in y12

You will have to (Hint: your school will not let you do otherwise)
If you take Maths Extension 1, you will have to do studies of religion as well - then that will be your twelve units sorted for you.
Have not heard good things about HMS - I don't think you will like it.

Well my school doesn't even offer enterprise lol so that's sorted out for me. My career pathway looks into software engineering, specifically artificial intelligence. My school doesn't offer ITM either, they don't actually offer many VET subjects.

I just don't know if I'd wanna choose 10 units because I think having a 2 unit fallback option in case I do bad in it would be helpful, just in case yk?

I've heard things about taking languages boosting your atar by a few points too. Is this true or just a myth? Because I'm half Indian, so I could take a beginners language and probably do pretty well in it. Have you got any experience in that area?

yep totally understand ur reasoning, and it's okay to do 12 units

nonetheless i personally recommend 10 units in year 12 because you've got less workload, more time to focus on specific subjects and in return actually do better in ur subjects, without the need of a fallback option. if you're gonna do 10 units, you've got the entirety of year 11 to sit through your 12-13 units and determine which ones you're going to keep and what you're going to drop, so think about the long run and think about your weaknesses and strengths per course.

ps. dont take my word for this but u can drop to 10 units like a week before your hsc (someoen verify this pls)

Looks like you will be getting into STEM courses for University, possibly data science, economics/commerce , physics and maybe engineering. Consider replacing Business Studies with Legal Studies or Physics - which might work better with economics (and since you are doing English Advanced and Mathematics Advanced - possibly also Mathematics Extension 1).
