Original Equipment Manufacture

OEM refers to Computer packages from Companies like IBM, Compaq, HP, DELL, etc...

it also refers to hardware that's directly from the manufacture.

I assume you are looking at my mainboard :p

IC7 = the product line for Abit (ie Abit IC7 is the model, abit being the manufacturer/company)

SATA = serial ATA, nice and tidy (fast) compared to standard IDE

RAID = HD array/setup (i've never used it, so it'll be on RAID 0)

1394 = IEEE 1394 = FireWire (mainly used on Apple Mac's, namely Firewire400 and Firewire800. Its just a connection (cable end/plug) type, they're squary and are 'similar' to USB 2

USB 2 = the newer standard (older one was USB 1.1), operates faster than USB1.1 (which was 12Mbps). Again, USB2 is the standard now, but is also backward compatible with USB 1.1 devices (your mouse, printer, digital camera, etc are using USB connections, they're squary as well)

And to fix up Winston's OEM acronym, it's Original Equipment Manufacturer :p

As Winston has said, they're your typical PC manufacturers, built to order or pre-packaged (according to standard 'levels' - designed to target key users, ie home students, gamers, office workers, etc)

Examples: IBM, Dell, compaq, HP, Gateway, Sony

And it also refers to original parts/equipment from the PC manufacturer themselves (sold via OEMs - most computer stores sell OEM hardware/software, which usually come without warranty or a limited warranty, no retail packaging and if you're buying hardware, you'll get the bare stuff with a manual -- saves money when you know what you want :))

GeForce FX's i've never used, but i would say that the GF4 is still better than the FX line. (Winston will tell you all about ATi :p, but I agree, ATi cards especially the new XT's and radeon Pros are impressive)

:)

you sure know which cards to get ;)
I'll give you that much.

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb DDR-II (Gigacube) $815.00

ATI Radeon 9800 128MDDR AGP8X Gigacube 325mhz, 620mhz $498.00

I assume you're not looking at the radeon 9800 Pro's, just the normal ones.

~$500 will cover it.

Since the new 9600 XT and 9800 XT's are out, the prices are set to drop presumably.

http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/press/2003/4690.html

9800 XT

9600 XT

they retail for about:

$750 AUD for the 9800 XT ($499 USD)
$300 AUD for the 9600 XT ($199 USD)

im not 100% on the RRP, but they should be pretty accurate.

read the press release (first link)

:)

there not much tweaking to do with graphic card.

btw, i recommend 9700 Pro over 9800, i think they are similar price.

anyway, if you are not a hardcore gamer, no need for such card.

2 things you need to solve slow computer equipment.

1) Overclocking
2) Liquid Nitrogen

I think it's more of a prestige thing...

"I've got the best, most expensive card out there... (for a few weeks, before the next model/card/chip comes out)"

Or not... Newbie probably wants an upgrade, so if he buys a decent card now, he won't have to upgrade for a few years, thereby saving money (in effect), instead of having to put up with some cheaper solution which won't please him now, and it wont be any good to him in 6 months to a year, two years. :)

I reckon a Radeon 9800 will last ages.

Even how fast the CPU speed gets due to technology, if you bought a 1.5GHz pentium ages ago, it will still run everything will good performance.

I'm yet to see something on a box saying

System Requirements:

1.5GHZ CPU
64 meg video card
512 ram

All it is these days is just feeling good that your computer is superior to others.

Hey wait, thats me! :(
