Independent assortment refers to the assortment of alleles independently of those of another gene.
Random segregation, on the other hand, refers to the random separation of alleles within one gene into different gametes, with one allele per gamete.
For example, say with the snow peas we investigated flower colour, purple (P) and white (p), as well as height, tall (T) and short (t). Independent assortment refers to the assortment of the alleles in flower colour and height without any influence from the other. So it doesnt matter which gamete receives the tall allele (for instance) when looking for a certain flower colour allele.
Random segregation is different in that it refers to the separation of the T and t (of P and p) alleles into different gametes. This occurs in a random fashion.
