I am doing costume design and i know in the past its been a popular idea to play around with the time and place of the play. eg. designing "Romeo and Juliet" in modern clothing. Some plays this seems to work with particularly Shalespeare. Anyway i'm thinking of doing summer rain, private lives or ham funeral.

Is it possible to play around with these also or is it best to stick to the time it was set in?.
If anyone knows, whats the marker's opinions on this is?, if its done well

In other words should i do it? or stick to the orginal?

thanks any comments appreciated

hey there
ive noticed all your costume design threads -sorry i havent replied to any, i just get busy haha

well im doing costume aswell
and im doing 'visions' by louis nowra i think

but yeah, in response to your question, its all a matter of your choice of design style. sticking to the time and setting of your play is like a 'realism' interpretation. its only one kind of design. and you can do things like 'abstract' and 'neo-realism' to focus on maybe the themes and underlying issues of the play.
so yeah, hopefully that was helpful
my advice would be to look at books or articles on costume design because they'd have a lot of hints.

good luck

im doing the ham funeral.
and so far have 3 designs almost completley finished.
i set the costuming in the 1920s as its too much of an expressionst
play to do eitherwise.
