how is the demand?
the pay?

btw, i was considering immunology...

medsci is just another glroified BSc just like BSc (adv) you can do everything a med sci student does with a BSc degree (besides the BSSM courses) but ther ereally is no difference at all between them. the degree will lead you to research or industry in the field of your major.

Hmmm, the question you should ask yourself is what do you want out of doing a science degree?

Like routemarker had said, medical science is almost the same as science is almost the same as Advanced science is almost same as science (biotechniology) is almost same as...

You get the point? :D

The only difference is that named degree is design for people who knows what they want to major in, like yourself, in immunology. :)

3 year degree (No honours) --> possibly become a research assistant/general hospital testing. Is this what you want to do? If no, keep reading

3 year degree (With Honours) --> a first step to experience what becoming a scientist is about. You plan, and conduct first hand research in your area of interest, i.e. immunology. e.g. to research the differentiation of B cell from stem cell. Job: higher employment rate in research assistant/hospital research/teaching at university (become a demonstrator/tutor).

Masters/PhD --> become a frontier in your field etc. Become a lectuer, various course coordinator, running uiniversity courses, research and publish paper, go to national and international conferences to hear about the advances in your research area (travelling for free!). Besides from employed by uni, you may be employed in a hospital carry out research, research institutions.

I hope this helps

Let me be more specific to answer your question.

Of course! You wouldn't want to pick something like philosophy where you get no job anyway, even though you want be immensely be interested in it.

One of the most difficult degree. Just because science subjects usually involve more assignments and projects compared to other subjects. When I say science I mean maths, chemistry, biology (including medical microbiology and immunology, biochem, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology etc), physics. I am not talking about subjects like safety science and stuff like that.

note that sicnece students have more contact hours because we have labs, whereas commerce/art people don't. But if you're passionate about your choice, you should be enjoying it! Even though sometimes you do get sick of studying for your weekly tests and preparing for exams. :)

Average starting salary for bachelor of science/med science/adv science etc. is around 38 000 to 40 000. Note this is jsut a 3 year degree. You shouldn't be expecting a lot from just learning theories and some practical aspects of science.
If you're good, you might get higher (do Honours!!).

PhD graduate: Do I even need to comment on this? I would assume somewehre between 60 000 to 75 000? No idea. Anyway, a lot higher! Depends where you're employed I suppose...

Immunology ROCKS! UNSW usually has an immunology major that combine with medical microbiology. So your major name would actually be "Medical Microbiology and Immunology".

If you change your mind about immunology, you can just major in "Microbiology".

sounds very cool, I'm so excited about doing BSc in microbiology (hopefully of course), but I hadn't heard what it's like from anyone who's doing it, so yeah woo hoo, glad you're entusiastic!

Hi! Microbiology is fun. Most of the lecturers in microbiology are some of the best lecturers. Kathy in Fundamentals of micro and immunology is one of the best lecturer you are going to have. :) Bascially her course made me want to major in micro.

Good luck!

Hi Survivior.. I've just got a few questions regarding the course. I'll be going to the science student centre this week but was hoping to see if you knew as well.

I was just wondering if you could shed a little more light on the majors for medical science. I'm in 2nd year, going onto 3rd year and I'm leaning towards one of the following majors:
  • Microbiology and immunology
  • Biochemistry and molecular biology

I've checked the handbook to determine what subjects I need to be taking for either, however the handbook is a little vague:
Students must nominate a major discipline by taking at least 18 UOC at Level III in one of these subject areas and fulfilling other course requirements specified for that Major.
I've scoured the handbook and came across pages such as this and there isn't a link to the description for medical science for 3rd year. The only descriptions I could find are for the honours specialistaion but I dont know what subjects I need to take for 3rd year.

Do you know where I could find this information?

btw I had now idea we could take Medical Microbiology and Immunology.. do you know where I could find out more information about that as well?

Thanks so much.

AFAIK there aren't any 3rd year BSSM subjects, so you just fulfil your major requirements.

A certain ex-boyfriend of mine said so, anyway

Yep.. thats all I needed to know. Basically I'm just going to pick the BIOC3xxx or whatever to satify the UOC requirements.

18 UOC in one of the subjects to satisfy the major? Thats only 3 subjects!

hi i have some more questions..are we allowed to do double majors in this program?? Also I'm thinking about doing pathology as a major, but it only offers 6UOC of PATH 3rd year subjects..so how am i supposed to make that a major if 18UOC is required?

Yes. In medical science, your choice of major is "broad" compared to a degree such as B Sc (Biotechnology). Med science student can major in any areas of medical sciences (anatomy, poathology, physiology etc..) and from school of BABS.

So here it is from the handbook:

Stage 3
42 UOC from the following subject areas: Anatomy, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Immunology, Pathology, Physiology & Pharmacology, Psychology, Biotechnology. Students must nominate a major discipline by taking at least 18 UOC at Level III in one of these subject areas and fulfilling other course requirements specified for that Major.

For example, you want to major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. You MUST take at least THREE courses with prefix BIOC3XXX. Therefore, biochemistry and molecular biology would become your major. Your other uoc remaining must include 6uoc of gen ed and whatever you like as long as they are from those subject area listed, such as micro, immuno, or more biochem subjects.

When they say "fulfilling other course requirements specified for that major" you need to consult Table A for B Science, since all majors have the same requirement no matter what science degree you're doing.

"Biochemistry" is actually a separate major to "Molecular biology", as is Microbiology and "Medical Microbiology and Immunology".

http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/ScienceTableA.pdf

From Table A, if you wish to major in Moelcular Biology, in third year, you must do MICR3021 or MICR3621, BIOC3121 or BIOC3621, BIOC3281. Plus 6 uoc from (see link).

That will form your major.

And yes, you can major in Microbiology or Medical Microbiology and immunology. :)
Note that they have different requirements. Different MICR3XXX combinations.

Hope this helps.

In B science, you cannot major in Pathology, only a minor is possible. But in Medical Science you can. You must do

PATH2201
PATH3205
PATH3206
PATH3207

There you have your nominated 18 UOC third year pathology subjects. Hence a major in Pathology.

If you do B science, even if you take all those subjects, you won't be able to have a B Science (Major in Pathology) :D. Something uniquely for Med science student. :p

Yep, so if you wanted to major in Biochem, then do 3 3rd year Biochem subjects, then one other subject, e.g. MICR3XXX. Micro would then be your minor.

Definitely NOT from the Science Student Centre. lol. I found it useless asking them stuff, so one day I decided to look through the Handbook carefully and see what subjects I needed to do for my major. All it means is you follow what Table A says you have to do and you'll be fine!
