I've been tossing up between studying composition at USYD or UniMelb. I'm a newly graduated year 12 student and I'm going to take a gap year to further my musical knowledge - ie; take piano lessons, singing lessons - as I am moreso a drummer and guitarist (though I do know my way around musescore).

I'm also debating studying a classical composition course or a more specialised course, ie; USYD's Composition for Creative Industries or UniMelb's Interactive Composition. I want to one day become a composer for film, tv, videogaming, that sort of vibe. These courses seem to specialise in that, but I am aware that I don't want to pigeon-hole myself into one career option, or pick a sub-par course that's just trying to get more students by seeming mroe appealing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

by USyd, are you talking about the con? I don't know much about the composition side at the con but I've a bunch of classical performers from there that really enjoy it. are you looking at the bachelor of music (composition)? personally I think that the conservatorium is good because it's a specialised music school, and also just the connections you can make (which are a big deal in music). I don't know how classically or non-classically inclined they are though (I'm a classical musician myself). probably if you wanna do film/music I dunno maybe a double in arts and music if that exists, I agree that some of them feel too boxed in - personally I reckon it's better to go for super established courses and see where they take you, but I don't know that much otherwise.

also I would LOVE to see you become a video game composer omg, have you seen (I mean heard) Silksong's soundtrack

hope it pans out!!
