Ok. I'm doing my HSC year- I know that what I want to do in uni is Film. Both the theory and practical side of film.

Now, I don't know where to go from here. How do I find an appropriate uni and course?

I know this sounds really stupid... but any help on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully I can get some advice from people who are actually doing something of the likes in uni currently. Let me know how you got to where you are now.

Re: COFA. I can't seem to find out much about the specific course from their website.. Do they deal with the theoretical side as well? Example: critical analysis of films, history of cinema etc....
And just out of interest, do they teach film as in celluloid... 16mm etc?

Re: B Media in Visual Production at MQ. Would you mind explaining & describing what your course consists of?

THANKS!

I would have thought the best place would be AFTRS.

http://www.aftrs.edu.au/

AFTRS graduates and their work have been represented at the last five Academy Awards. Its roll-call of graduates includes many of Australia’s finest filmmakers such as: Jane Campion, Phillip Noyce, Gillian Armstrong.

COFA is better for fine arts and art theory.

I'm not totally sure, but from what I've read at the webpage of the AFTRS, their courses don't allow much room for experimentation.... I don't know.

Does anyone go to AFTRS?

AFTRS is very good - but I was under the impression it only offered graduate for courses for those with previous experience, not something many 06ers would have.

If you're looking for someone who actually goes to COFA, I think Komaticom does...

Graduate or Post-graduate courses are (P)GradCerts, (P)GradDips, Masters, or Phds and are usually done when someone has a first degree (undergraduate degree - usually a Bachelor). In AFTRS, they are less worried about what degree you have as opposed to what experience you have behind you thus you'd be expected to have some background in the field already - something many people gain during their first degree. So while any school leaver could apply, I don't know if many of them would have built up that experience.

So it really depends on how much background in film you already have I guess.

So, do you mean that I would need to complete an undergraduate course first, then apply at AFTRS?

Yeah that's what Kami means.

I would've thought that AFTRS would've been the best option, it probably still is but I didn't realise it was a Graduate school.

You're best bet would do some sort of media course, and the general consensus is that the best of these would be at either UTS or Charles Sturt.

At UTS you should consider the BA in Communication (Media Arts and Production), which would let you develop generic media skills whilst developing a portfolio of works and gaining some industry experience at the same time. I remember a couple of people on this forum complaining about the theory in this course, which is more a plus for you

I know a girl who, like you, wanted to get into film making and aimed to get into this course (because it was the most, and possibly the only relevant one in Sydney). She didn't get in, but now she's doing a film-related course at TAFE, which can be a back up. She also looked into some private media colleges, particularly one located up at Byron Bay, which could be an alternative, albeit expensive option.

Charles Sturt is another option should you want a change of scenery and more independence. A browse of their list shows they have courses in theatre and media, design for stage and television, as well as acting courses).
http://www.csu.edu.au/faculty/arts/courses/courses_ug.htm

All the above courses are very vocationally focussed, but it sounds like you're pretty intent on this anyway. kami would be a better source of info on the actual structure of Communications courses at UTS.

Avoid the media course at Sydney Uni like the plague, it's only advantages being the ability to do an Arts major at Sydney, attendance at a Sandstone uni, and a ridiculously high UAI cut-off you can show of to friends and family...

Other than that, the rest is up to you.

P.S: I'm weary of my previous mistakes, so you might want to check out that media course in visual production at Macquarie too

Many people would develop the background and experience needed through their undergraduate degree however there are some who get themselves involved in the industry early and are already familiar with it - if that sounds like you, then give AFTRS a shot. However, if you're otherwise just starting out then perhaps its best for you to consider an undergraduate degree or even diploma first.

This doesn't stop you from applying to any of their short courses(during, before or after your degree) though - which would definitely build some good skills which you could use in your career later on.

Another course that might be good for you also, is the BA in Visual Communications at KvB. Its a fairly vocational course with some theory and it seems to have a good reputation in the field.

As regards the UTS BA in Communications, well UTS is generally regarded as having on of the best communications schools in the state but from what I've heard this course at least is very theoretical if you major in Media Arts & Production. (I do the same course but in a different major) What happens is in first year all your subjects are chosen for you and they are in four areas. Three of those areas are common to all BA in Communications students at UTS and they are:
* Communications and Media type stuff - basically study how the media interacts with our society, culture and life. For example, Rupert Murdoch's monopoly on news allowing him to influence public affairs and politics. It also discusses how and why audiences value and react to certain info. I actually find its sorta interesting, but I can't wait for second year when I don't need to do this stuff anymore. This provides most of the theory for Journalism, Info Management and Public Communications
* Sociopolitical studies - this is essentially about the social policies of our nation and how they affect the individual. For example, aboriginal rights and access to power and benefits or gay marriage and adoption rights. There is also an online component to this area. Hate this one - completely, alot of the others seem to enjoy it though.
* Cultural studies - It essentially is about investigating cultural texts and phenomena in a contemporary environment. The lectures are interesting, and so is the reading content but it is an extreme bitch to actually study. This provides the bulk of the theory for the writing[ie me] and media production subjects.

The fourth subject will be your major subject (ie media arts for you, writing for me, journalism for the next person etc.) and you'll basically study the theory of media production and what not in this and this. And that'd be first year.

In second and third year, you'll continue with cultural studies + media arts & production + an arts elective (from uts or usyd or unsw or mq etc.), though of course you will get a wider range of cultural studies and media arts subjects to choose from each semester. And thats the UTS one in a nutshell.

AsyLum or Phanatic would be the best persons on here to discuss MQs Media courses with if you want to know more about them.

Don't know where to begin

Ok. I don't know if I'm too late or what, but i'm doing the HSC this year. So i've got, what, 3 months left of school.

I REALLY want to do a film course at some uni, or maybe go to a specialist school for film. But mainly, I want to do Film (celluloid & digital, theory & practical).

The problem is: I have NO IDEA where to start. I don't know what university's to look into or anything else... :(

I was hoping maybe people in this forum could guide me through the process of finding and applying for a course...

It would relieve much of the stress that I have at the moment about finding courses and such...

THANK YOU!!!

Re: Don't know where to begin

I'm not exactly into media, or that sorta stuff, but:

Get hold of a UAC guide (ie purchase from newsagent or free from your careers advisor at school) and that'll list all the degrees you could do. In there you'll be able to see the degrees that're offered, and pick ones that're better for you. Not to say that the above subset isn't to be considered, but I'd imagine it's only a subset of the options, so you should be aware of the full set of options, rather than just the above.

But as said, I'm no media student, so I might've missed something specific about the question. Just my 2c.
