NO₂ leads to the formation of photochemical smog.

NO₂ + sunlight → NO + O, then O + O₂ → O₃

NO₂ + O₂ + carbon compounds + sunlight → PAN

PANs are peroxyacyl nitrates. The simplest PAN is peroxyacetylnitrate, CH₃CO-OO-NO₂.
