e is a number, not the inverse of a function (especially one whose definition relies on the definition of e :)). I guess the most intuitive way to 'discover' the number e is to consider the derivative of the functions 2^x and 3^x. You'll be left with some constant, < 1 and > 1 respectively, times your original function. So we reason there must be some number between 2 and 3, call it e, such that the function e^x leaves you with the constant 1 times your original function when you differentiate.

P.S. I cringe everytime someone calls it Euler's number.

e = 1 + 1/1! + 1/2! + 1/3! + 1/4! + ............
e = lim n ->∞ (1 + 1/n)n

π = 4 - 4/3 + 4/5 - 4/7 + 4/9 - 4/11 + ..........

Any more?

Wha ... what the fuck? Constants being expressed as sums?
I thought it was peculiar that the sine and cosine function could be expressed as a sum of a Taylor series (whatever it was called).
Damn integration.

I love pi but e is quicker for me to write and less likely to turn out illegible if I'm writing quickly.

i learnt it in year 9 maths when it was posted up around the room and was often bored so i learnt pi to 100 places off by heart

Guaranteed my bank manager knows that limit you mentioned.

well thats where some of them come from

tan-1 x = x - x3/3 + x5/5 - x7/7 + ...

sub in x = 1, and you'll get a series for pi/4
Now that I am learning Taylor polynomials and series this stuff is actually pretty cool.

That's not sad, that's amazing!

To OP, you should put in a third and a fourth option "Both" and "Neither".

Pi even goes beyond maths and into the economic world it also is used to be a symbol for inflation :) Except that doesn't mean inflation is equal to 3.142 blah blah blah

Other than that, e is so much more useful

pi.The use of pi in integration is really elegant. e is annoying. I find it confusing doing differentiation with e.
