There is alot of paper work, very repetive. Then there is cooling off periods, in wich the police check out your criminal record and other things. The Commisioner of Police can denie giving you your liscense.

If your reason for getting a gun liscense is hunting, then you need to get a large property owner to fill out sections in your application.

I'm pretty sure that it is a tick box for geninue reasons for owner or using a gun and proction isn't one of them.

I recently took and passed a test to go for my full adult liscense class b (rimfire rifles not self loading, non pump action shotguns).
Ur correct, every website i have ever seen, that talkes about this issue state that "protection" is not an adequate reason for owning a firearm in Australia

Anyone, who meets the requirements and passes all the background checks.
What should the requirements be though? Is the status quo OK?

You know, most murderers are just normal everyday people. Its not like they are deranged sociopaths that you can pick from a test.

However serial killers tend to display pretty similar thought patterns.

But murders can be narrowed down into how their minds work, cause some ppl react differently to different stimuli, such as anger, stress, rejection, embarrassment

I remember looking at crime in legal studies. One of the things that suprised me was statistically most murders are carried out as a "in the heat of passion" thing and use whatever is nearest. A gun is a dangerous thing in the hands of a calculating killer, but those are the tiniest fraction of those who actually kill.

Very true, that the majority of murders are murders of passion, and would use whatever they could find, usually if stored correctly a gun would hardly be handy in this situation

I don't know about Korn but I could do with a gun later in life to protect myself from snakes, wild dogs, mad cattle and any other thing which may try and attack me or my loved ones on my property.

P.S. I live on a property but I don't own it. I have no reason to be a liscened gun owner (or maybe I do I haven't read the forms). so anyway if a big brown snake (highly venomous you know) or a wild dog (some of them are savage mongrels that have been running wild for generations) or crazed cow (spit coming our of it's mouth, weird eyes etc) attacks me or my family etc have to run and get my old man who has to run (or ride or drive or whatever) to the gun locker, unlock that, unlock the ammo, load the gun and get back to the scene of the incident.
Luckily our property is relatively small so it should only take five or ten minutes, provided I find him right away.

P.P.S. I want my own property!!!!

P.P.P.S. And gun are also used for protection against people. Criminals carry illegal guns. They like to break into houses. Some of them don't care about human life. Most people have family or simply themselves they want to protect. Dialing 000 requires a handy phone (which may not be available) and then the waiting to be put through, the chit chat with the person on the other end, and the time it takes for the actual cop to get to your house. Mostly this process gives sufficient time for theives, or murders, to do what they came to do.
