Today i got my chem at1 results (but not the paper)
i got 66% and ranked 5th, (im gonna argue for more marks on monday when we get our papers)

how is it that my ranks are gonna ‘save’ my hsc mark if my marks are so bad?
shouldnt it be marks > ranks rather than ranks > marks?

your raw mark in the actual hsc matters, but your raw mark in random assessment tasks isn’t what matters (only the ranks and relative mark differences between them), because NESA doesn’t know how hard your random assessment task was

So how come your final hsc mark is 50% internal and 50% external if they dont use the internal marks and only ranks?

bc they use the mark that your rank got in your cohort in the final exam. then it is moderated by the relative gaps between ranks. this is that '50%' you get contributing towards your final mark.

Ok so the grades for my chem class were:
1st 28/32
2nd 25/32
2nd 25/32
4th 24/32
5th 21/32 (me)
and we are 15 people

if i get a raw 80 in chem hsc, assuming my rank remains constant, how would that affect me in terms of final hsc mark?

~80 in chem aligns to around 86 so that will be fixed as your external mark. then you get the 5th rank's mark which is then scaled somewhat closely to the above. you don't know what mark that will be until u get ur mark. so its completely in the air rn what ur prediction is.
