i am still not sure whether i want to become a teacher or not. and if i do a b ed there will be many subject areas that i love, which i won't be able to pursue. should i do a more general degree or a teaching degree if i'm not sure? because if i do another degree for a while and realise i made the wrong decision it would get complex. and visa versa? what should i do?

Once you're in a degree, it's not overly difficult to swap degree paths after a year, and there can be a lot of similarities in first year courses for that exact reason.

In terms of not being able to follow areas of interest, that shouldn't be the main deterrent, because you can always do extra courses and saying that, uni is certianly not the only source of knowledge out there...

the thing is, for me its either a b arts/ b science (combined degree) or b edu primary. in the b arts i can do japanese, which i love, and from that i plan to teach english in japan, where you can earn some good money. but if i do a b ed primary, i won't have the fluency required to teach in japan. also, in arts/science i can do philsophy, which i love. so i'm so confused.

wow, that's a great story. wouldn't mind doing that myself. yeah so, for you, the backdoor into teaching in japan was your exchange. i've heard this before and will be sure to capatilise on the opportunity should it arise in my future degree.

out of interest, whats the general ratio of guys becoming teachers to women becoming teachers these days?

I can't remember the exact figures off the top of my head, but there are still more females in teacher training courses than guys. It changes for stages too, in early education there are barely any guys, but it goes up a little in primary and more again in secondary teacher training courses. Females are still far more greatly represented than guys though, in my specialisation there will be 3 guys graduating compared to 15-18 women.

As the others have said about teaching in Japan, there are stacks of opportunities and agencies out there to help you, so there's no real worries there. Some are just after a degree and you'll teach English, others will require you to have a teaching degree of some nature.

Saying that, there are many many recruiters and agencies for international teaching, from Japan to the UK to South Africa to the Middle East. Just looking at one recruiter I get contacts from, there's a current job for an ICT Teacher in Oman, an Early Years teacher in Japan - these sort of jobs require an education degree.
