"UWS is currently looking at wireless as an option to improve access to the network for our students. We have applied for (and have been successful) in gaining a $2M grant from the Commonwealth in 2006 to establish a comprehensive wireless network across all our campuses. We intend to establish wireless access points in teaching spaces, common areas like the Library and student activity areas so that students (and staff) can be connected at any time.
As you may know, we have around 1200 PCs in general purpose computer labs already. There are a further 500-600 in specialist areas like the Library and School of Computing and Information Technology that provide additional access for special needs. However our overall student to computer ratio is only around 1:16. There are physical constraints (i.e. lack of space) that limit our ability to grow this number and wireless will certainly allow more flexibility in this area.
I expect that substantial progress will have been made on this installation by this time next year.
I'm not so sure that we could eliminate fixed PC in specialised labs just yet - but there's no doubt that as wireless becomes more ubiquitous, it will increasingly be more convenient for students to use their own computer and demands on a UWS-supplied facility will fall.
We have had discussions with vendors re the supply of cheaper laptops to students. Dell has a good scheme that is by all accounts a great deal however a marketing effort at the start of the year by Dell elicited limited interest. I suspect that the individual machine price may still be just a little too much for most of our students.
