Is wireless still as bad as it used to be (those in the know, know that it is/was one of the easiest systems to hack into.) Or have they fixed up all the old problems?

don't worry about hackers, worry about the slow speed compared to an ethernet connection.

Yes, wireless is still an insecure way of communication. Give me a hard line connection any day, it's harder to plug into a hub in your living room and steal your bandwidth than it is to sit outside in the street and steal your bandwidth, if you know what you are doing.

i think wireless is pretty secure now a days

just put the standard securities on ur access, and it's fine!

some hacker is not going to sit outside ur house, just in range and start hacking away. I'm sure ppl have better things to do.

as jm said, speed is ur main concern.
I know ppl that turn their WAPs off, when not used.

As long as you encrypt your connection with non-default user-names and passwords (admin/password etc) you shouldn't have to worry about average users leeching from or hacking into your network. If you're worried about hax0r kids with Air Snort or simular software simply change your password every once in a while; I assume this is for home use, so you'll probably won't be transmitting many weak keys a day. It would probably take a month or so minimum for the encryption to be cracked.

Wireless is fine for home users (except for the whole speed and cost issue).

Windows SP2 includes some wireless stuff... havent checked it out though, but it makes it alot easier to set up stuff.
If you know what you are doing, security shouldnt be a problem.

Firewalls only protect at border of the computer. The problem with wireless networks is that all data transmitted is broadcasted and can be picked up by anyone within range of the broadcast.

Provided you use proper encryption, I don't see how security is much of a worry to the average home user.

If someone's going to sit outside your house and hack into your network all day, then that person's probably determined enough to get access even if you're using wired.

It all depends where you live, war drivers will drive around wherever the wind takes them looking for connections, and if you are somewhere densly populated, you're much more likely to be a target than if you live on spacious blocks of land in the middle of woop woop.

Wireless is pretty secure if you use WAP. However, the main problems with wireless is that there are many people using it that don't really know how to make it secure, leaving the door open to hackers nad the like. For example, I could connect to my neighbour's network if i wanted beacuse he does not have it secured. Basically, wireless is safe if you know how to set up it using WAP.

i got a g connection and it is rather slow.....

goes at around 10-15 Mbps

compared to the 40-60 you can get with a wired connection.

Whats the differences between a g & b connection

theoretically speeds, b ~10Mbps g ~54Mbps.

g is basicly b + OFDM
