So, are there any semester 1 WORK1003 students on the forum? If so, what was (or is if you are still to get through the exam) the unit like in terms of the lecture content and the nature of the assessments?

Basically, I plan on taking the unit this coming semester yet I have an unfortunate clash meaning that I will probably have to skip one lecture each week, so I was wondering whether I could catch up on the missed lecture in my own time without fear of being left behind.

The WORK1003 lectures are repeated (well they were anyway this semester), but as it seems, they won't be next semester. Bradon Ellem is a great lecturer and he does put slides up beforehand each week, and doing the readings should suffice for catching up.

Even with the exam still to come, I think it's safe to say it was a pretty easy subject (well I found it to be anyway, was/is my best unit for this semester), though it can be dull at times (stupid HR component). There's also a huge gender imbalance - the only other two guys in my tute dropped the unit, thus, besides the tutor, I was the sole male in the class - a great situation to be in when talking about the declining male breadwinner breed! Try to get John Murray as your tutor too. It also helps to politically aware and to keep abreast with the latest IR news (i.e.: well versed about 'Workchoices'), and it's a bonus if you're doing ECOP at the same time (I copied and paste hefty amounts onto a WORK1003 essay from my ECOP essay, for which I got a mere credit. The result? An HD for my WORK essay - go figure...*stupid Chris Jefferis*).

Oh, assessments were okay, except the Commentary question can be a bit vague. It's easy to rip the tute presentation, you don't have to correct, you just have show conviction and be engaging (i.e: controversial and entertaining). Essay was only 1500, and if you're doing ECOP, it's very easy, there's a lot of cross over especially when it comes to Marxist perspectives on work. Also, from my experiences, they mark easier compared to the ECOP department. The exam is only 90 minutes and is only worth 30% as well, all short answer style questions, no lengthy essays, plus Bradon practically tells you what's in the exam!

Wasnt it Marian Baird who did the lectures on Performance analysis or something, the one week and Bradon didnt take them? Friends told me they didnt bother coming to the second hour. And, if Sirius_G is right (which he probably is) about the more unitarist flavour next semester, if you're left-leaning, you might find it... distasteful.

But yes, it does seem the WORK1003 tutors are, all in all, great (dare i say it, but, collectively, more so than the ECOP tutors). Mind you, my tutor (John Murray), left us a week early to go to the World Cup...
