In the jacaranda textbook pg 468 how did they get the value of 4.032980?

when i do it using the data sheet from bos, i do

2x (9.109 x 10^-31 + 1.675 x 10^-27 + 1.673 x 10^-2) / (1.661 x 10^-27) = 4.03240 which is different to the book.

and also how do you work out the mass of the original helium atom which is 4.002603 in the exam? what values do they normally to give to you in the exam?

Isnt that the point?
There is a mass difference which is caused by binding energy

Usually they give you the mass of most reactants and you only
have to do a few simple proton neutron calculations

nah, what i worked out is the components

the original mass is 4.002603

i think it may be a rounding off error in jacaranda

yeh, if its an old book and you've got a new data sheet
that could cause some problems, work with their values
and see if you get their answer
(theirs should be in the back of the book)

i am using their values from the book =p

so when working out the mass defect what stats in the hsc do they usually give you? will they give you the amu of the atoms?

i'll repeat what i wrote, usually they give you all the info cept a few simple neutron proton calculations,
