I'm considering taking up Asian Studies - would any of you recommend/advise against it? I'll be doing Political Economy, and Goverment or IR (I've heard Geopolitics is shit, any other tips?), so I probably won't have any room for an Asian language.

If not Asian Studies, then I'll stick to French!

Very informative post.

I would recommend Asian studies, but that recommendation is tempered by the fact I only did one semester of it. Prof. Helen Dunstan is fantastic, and my experience with that Department has been nothing but positive so far.

Do European studies. Europe pwns Asia. And blacks. Especially blacks.

Thanks Phanatical. I reckon employers will look upon Asian Studies a bit more favourably than French. As much as I'd prefer to work in Europe for all the reasons that Stazi probably hates Asia (presumably) and Asians, there'll be more opportunities in Asia (can anyone vouch for this?) It's also one of the few areas where my ethnic background would be a good point...

It'd probably be better to ask specific questions about the faculty as opposed to asking whether it's a "good idea" to do a certain degree. If I were you, I'd study an asian language, even if you speak another asian language fluently - otherwise you'll be walking away from university with just another specialist arts degree. Where do you want get a job in asia specifically? You should really be asking questions like:

- Potential for exchange
- Teaching quality of specific subjects
etc

You should also be asking yourself whether combining would increase your chances of getting a job, where you want a job.

I did Asian Studies for a semester, and it was pretty good, the subject was slightly easier than the other Govt subjects I did, make sure you get a good tutor.
