Nope, no help. I know exactly how he did it. He confirmed it today. The mail was sent to all staff/students at Wollongong, Shoalhaven, Bateman's Bay (or is it Bega?), Moss Vale, Loftus, Sydney, Singapore, and Dubai. Whoops. :(

How is user information kept in unix systems? We were shown this one in a lecture. The lecturer even used me as an example!

oh yeah...

hahaha, that's so simple. A shell script would do the trick.

You'd need some sort of expression to only get everything before the first ':' on each line. I thought of changing the IFS to ':' but that'd get the username, x, the uid, shell, home dir, gids etc.

But yeah, it's so simple.

cut -f 1 -d : /etc/evilFile inside a loop which did that for each line would do, I think? :)

I hope I find the car that belongs to this guy, I'll completely dent the other side of his car and leave a note saying 'It wasn't a tree this time, it was me. Maybe you can find me out by emailing everyone on campus again?'

His email account has been suspended for 12 weeks meaning he can't access webct, sols or banshee to submit assignments. So basically he wont be able to do much throughout the session.

Yeah it's normally almost all computer submissions. But I'd imagine if he talks to the lecturers about the situation there would *have* to be alternative arrangements made? I can't see how it would be ethical (or even legal?) for the Univeristy to put someone in a position where they are unable to submit anything?

The usage policy does say that you may have your account banned if you act like a dick, but as of my last reading I saw no indication that this could place you in a position where you're unable to complete the set course-work.

Sure he did the wrong thing, and I definitely agree that a penalty is called for, but I don't think it's appropriate that said penalty interferes with University work.

If it really does however, he's before the census date for this session, so maybe he could just call it off and have an early summer break :> Fuck them, I wouldn't be paying for that if that's the way it's going to pan out.

Maybe he should do a mass email sendout to everyone asking everyone to join his cause in having his internet rights returned... oh wait a minute... nevermind :D

Oh yes, UOW are pricks... If I was him, I wouldn't be expecting any favours.

That wouldn't be too hard, either.

He could get a friend to log in for him, get the username of everyone in the uni in a text file, download it (or email it) to another email account.

However, a ban like that shows us exactly how understanding our friends in ITS are. =\

Atticus.

how do i get out of this
