ps3 has its fair share of 12 yr olds as well.

I suggest going for the console your friends have - it's fun to play multiplayer (ie shooters like BF, COD) with your friends.
Alternatively, you could consider getting a PC - then you get awesome graphics, mods, etc etc although you do need a decent PC to be able to play video games on it.

Also, check out the list of exclusives each console has e.g. Demon's Souls and Heavy Rain are exclusively for the PS3, games like Gears of War and Halo are only on the Xbox and see if there are any games you want to play.
Ultimately, whichever console you buy there will be a ton of games to play on it, you'll have fun either way.

If your a hardcore gamer, then Xbox is the way to go. But if your a casual gamer who wants an all round entertainment system, ps3 is the way to go.

Can't go wrong with either.
This generation, I've really only played multiplatform games; the only exceptions really being Alan Wake and Gears of War. The others (like Forza Motorsport) have substitutes on PS3, so its all good.

EDIT: I only have an Xbox.

To be fair the wii is only shit for online and multi-plats. Its got a kick-ass exclusive line-up though

but yeah if you want to play online and multi-plat games do not just own a wii, because then you will fail.

ps3 has/had better hardware than xbox but now they're basically the same console except one's a blu-ray player (so you get to pay more for the same junk, lol yeah so much better). My main reason for having an xbox 360 instead of a PS3 is that I fucking despise PS3 controllers like nothing else. They're so much more difficult to manoeuvre and they're uncomfortable.
