Hi,

What does it mean to explain the effect of the technique? I keep hearing to do it but don't actually understand what it means. How can a technique affect meaning?

For example, In "Fair is foul and foul is fair" from Macbeth I have found Chiasmus, oxymoron, foreshadowing and symbolism (of appearance vs reality theme). But how can this have an effect?

Think of effect as like, what the quote tells you and the technique as the specific part of a quote.
e.g for your example, the oxymoron might tell you how appearances are deceiving- because an oxymoron is something that contradicts itself.
