"Yeats' poetry can be seen not only in the context of the socio-political upheavals of the early twentieth century, but also as a pre-occupation with his own unique philosophies and symbolisms. His values are inherent in a reading of the following poems:

When You Are Old
Easter 1916
Wild Swans At Coole
The Second Coming"

Discuss your understanding of the historical, philosophical and literary values of each of the above works.

Just wondering how i should interpret/answer this to write a good essay...
Should i refer to opening statement at all?
Or just discuss the historical, phil...... etc....???

I would answer this, but not having an appreciation for Yeats and his "awful" poetry renders you unworthy of my assistance. Sorry.

sorry poetry critic 101,

i do have appreciation for yeats poetry. I just find the unit as a whole rather..... boring. I appreciate shakespeare, but overanalysing plays from 3-4 centuries ago i just find tiresome and enough to put me off the subject...

I think Yeats himself as a person was a bit wiered, but i've never met him, so i can't really comment.

Yeats. The name itself is wrong afterall Yates is better.

Well on the essay question you should answer the discuss statement but involve the first bit at the top.
