say i have a curve
y=x^3

so stationery point at (0,0)

does the gradient after the point (0,0) of x^2 tell anything about the graph of y = x^3

I think no, just lucky that you have the same stationary point on both graphs.
I think you only need to check gradient when there absolute value involve. Other equations just use normal method (calculus to find stationary points)
