Its only $380.10 if u live out of home because living at home means you need to travel more than 90 minutes on transport.

If you recieve that which is under youth allowence and you rent or pay board you can also apply for rent assist which will increase your payment to pay rent or some of the rent.

Dunno, but i get youth allowence and i spoke to them a few times now about this. If u get youth allowence and you move out u get that increase.

At the moment I dont get youth allowance due to parents making too much. however i live 3 hours away from uni, do you think I could get that leaving 90 mins away or not?

I'm pretty sure there is no allowance for having to travel 90 minutes or more - please correct me if i'm wrong though cos i'd love to hear about it :)

For the under 25s in full time study, the only thing is Youth Allowance (Austudy is for over 25s). Visit the centrelink site for info.

In a nutshell:

Amount:
- living at home with parents: $200 per fortnight
- moved out: $348 per fortnight (if you are moved out, you may also qualify for rent assistance or fares allowance - im not sure how much these are worth)

* If your parents make less than $30k per year (which isn't very much), you automatically qualify for Youth Allowance

* Otherwise: You have to be independent from your parents, and there are a number of ways to prove this.

1. Move out (obviously)

2. Earn around $18k in an 18 month period after leaving school

3. Work for 15 hours or more per week for 2 years after leaving school

So for the majority of people who are planning to commute to uni, it's unlikely that youll get youth allowance

If you recieve youth allowence and you need to live out of home as it takes you MORE THAN 90 MINS travel on public transport including waiting time to get to uni if you stay at home then yes you qualify for an increase in youth allowence to $380.10cents and are also eligable to apply for rent assistance to pay rent/board.

I think the 90 mins of travel thing is just to stop people choosing to move out bludging off the government.

This is 100% correct for people recieve youth allowence e.g Me

It also includes living with family too like grandparents etc

I'd appreciate that but unlike you, I'm still underage and I don't turn 18 until september. Regardless, we'll catch up sometime! As for what I'm doing this year, just read my sig!

So let me get this right I live at home and it takes me 90 to 120 mins each way.. and this means I should get 380 a fornight insted of 230?

sweet I'm so gonna ask them about this cause I easily spend 50 bucks a week on public transport to uni.

Sorry i should of made it clearer. You need to move out of home to get the increase. But to prevent people moving out by choice and getting money off the government they made it that travel from home must be more than 90 minutes to make it necessary for you to live out of home.

Its dumb because i dont wanna live with my grandparents but im gonna spend around $50 a week on petrol getting to and from uni.

Hey guys, just to let you know, theres an organisation which specialises in financial planning for uni students! Its heaps handy to get finance stuff understood for now and for later in life. The best thing is, it only costs $50 bucks and if you refer a friend you get a complementary consultation!!!!!

visit www.yellowrock.com.au

Please check it out, if you have any questions, just forward it to them, they are here to help you.

Spread this address around as much as you can and let everyone know because I think every student should have the opportunity to get their money issues sorted out!!!

Peace guys xx

i think that's wrong. last time i checked with centrelink (last month), the ways are:
- earn enough for 18 months
- extreme family breakdown (ie you're moving out not because it's too far away but because of violence, drug abuse etc. just because it's too far away doesn't qualify you under the test of independence)
- getting married (which i'm planning to do)

yeah, you can't get it if you just move out of home, my friend moved to lismore from the blue mountains and she can't get youth allowance cause she's still considerd dependant on her olds, even though they pay for nothing cause they where against her going to uni that far away.

I think.. that's the main fucked up thing about youth allowance.. that you have to be fighting with your olds and move out because u can't live with them any more to get youth allowance..
