I am in year 10 and I got to do a science project and I have got to hand in what I am going to do next week. I have decided on something but I'm not sure how I am going to do it. I was thinking of measuring the amount of calories in different types of chips (Doritoes, Smiths etc.) but I don't know how to do it and what the control for the experiment would be. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!:)

are you just trying to measure the variance between the calories of different chips?

tbh its a pretty bland idea. kilojoules are on the back of the packet anyway.

you might need to think of a new idea.

Get a certain measured mass of chips and suspend it in the air with something like a needle fixed perpendicular to a disk on a table or something and add a measured mass of water into a beaker(metal ones r better) and place it on top of the chips. Burn the chips(start combustion with a match). After burning, use the equation: Energy produced=mass of water (in grams) x 4.18 x change in temperature of water. Of course you need a thermometer to measure the water temperature. The energy will be in joules and so convert it into calories(look up on the internet). That will be an Yr11 chemistry student's way of doing it but anyway, that's the only thing I can think of. And if you ask me more details on how you actually suspend the chips, I have no idea.

No worries, it's good to hear that it helped. I didn't think it would coz if I were to carry out that experiment, I wouldn't be able to be bothered to prepare all the stuff.

If you guys think this is a boring idea for a science project, please give me other suggestions or I will continue the calorie one. Thanks everyone.
