Students at RMIT University in Melbourne protest over lack of Muslim prayer rooms

AAP
March 22, 2009 03:40pm

MELBOURNE Muslim university students will protest tomorrow, saying they are being sexually harassed and discriminated against due to a lack of prayer rooms.
But RMIT University management deny this, insisting Muslim students are well catered for.

The RMIT Islamic Society want Muslim-only prayer rooms on the university's city campus.

In late 2007, construction work on the building that contained a dedicated Muslim prayer room meant the facility was demolished.
The Islamic society said the university reneged on its promise to replace that with another room.
"As a result, students and staff have been forced to pray outside in the heat of summer and the cold of winter," the society's website said.

It alleged females have been subjected to sexual abuse, harassment and religious vilification while praying.
They are now forced to pray two at a time in cramped women's rooms, corridors and empty classrooms.

The society said "enough is enough", insisting it was sick of being given the run around and would hold a mass protest at the university on Monday afternoon.

"No longer can we remain quiet and have students compromise between their safety and prayers, RMIT made a promise, it must fulfil it," the website said.
But the university described the action as "unfortunate and unnecessary".

There are already eight Muslim prayer rooms across the university's three campuses, Dr Maddy McMaster, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) said.
"The university's policy is that prayer rooms in its spiritual centre are multi-faith, open to bookings by members of all faiths," she said.

Muslims get preferential access to two of those rooms.

"With space at a premium on our city campus, we have bent over backwards to find an amicable solution," she said.
Gestures of good faith have been rejected, she insisted.

"Multi-faith spaces are commonly accepted as supporting a range of religious practices, including those of the Muslim faith.

"It is disappointing that the RMIT Islamic Society chooses to reject established multi-faith principles," she said.
The society did not respond to AAP requests for comment.

hmm, tough call, if its going to effect the potential influx of uni students, then they should make. After all, all unis run as cooperate entities.

however, if it was my call, id knock down all prayer rooms at uni no matter what religion its for.

For every Muslim prayer room they build, they would need to build another one. Men and women aren't allowed to pray around men, because they distract the men with their nice curves, which incidentally is why women get raped.

In Orthodox Judaism, yes, but in most synagogues in Australia you will find it's not how it is done.

Why do these muslims have to be so selfish?
The Christians arent demanding a private prayer room; they share prayer rooms with other religions.
The Jewish arent demanding a private prayer room; they share prayer rooms with other religions.
All the other misc religions arent demanding a private prayer room; they share prayer rooms with other religions.
But the muslims are demanding private prayer rooms when they already get preference in some of the other prayer rooms already.

Actually most Synagogues in Australia are Orthodox so offer separate seating so both male and female can concentrate on prayer.

Meh, as long as all the religions are treated equally. If the Muslims get a private prayer room then so do the rest. That or get rid of all regious facilities at university...after all uni is about education not religion.

There should only be generic prayer rooms for all religions or the people wanting to pray can go to an empty class room. Infact, if u want to go pray, dont go to uni for it. Universities shouldnt have to cater for its students religons.

Would you prefer them in the corridors praying and blocking your way?
I would prefer they use an empty room or some other place that is out the way. If people want to pray at uni that is their problem not the problem of other students or the university.

People should not be given special treatment because of their religion... not in Australia.

Technically yes, but they just offer the seating, it is not enforced. Not so in a mosque, where men and women praying together just doesn't happen.

It hasn't. He asks why should muslims get their own prayer room when everyone else is capable of using a common prayer room. He then says that there should be no prayer rooms at uni.

Not conflicting at all.

Or do i need to slam my head into my keyboard so this post comes out in a language you can understand?

wtf r u on about? to sum up my posts; ive said that
-all the religious should be treated equally if uni's are going to cater for its students religions
-that if the Muslims get private prayer rooms then all the other religions should too
-i suggested that there should be no private rooms at all and only a genric prayer room if the uni's are going to cater for religiouns
- And then i stated my opinion that there should no catering for religions at all.
