Laptop < $700-800, light/portable 4 educational purpose (1 Viewer)

need it for:
- internet
- ms office 07
- media playing
- maybe some programs here and there
im a student on a budget. Any suggestions?

by the way, i made a previous thread on eeepc.
but i have realised eeepc has way too small keys on the keyboard
and i just wanted to put the question out there of which laptop brand ppl may have suggestions for based on my listed criteria.

eee pc, msi wind, any other netbook.

netbook would be mainly what ur after, but some dont have cd/dvd drives, so dpends on what u wanna do with it.

edit: or mabe look for a cheap dell on dell's website, tho i dont think theyre under 700$

ok cool thanks. cd/dvd drive not essential and im happy to get an external one if needed. by the way, i just went on the dell website and saw these dell mini ones... not sure if they're good quality? apparently they've just come out recently..?

dell adamo just came out, but thats shit expesive (and about 1cm thick lol), i personally dont know about dell mini's, but they'll probalby suit ur needs

from memory the 10' eeepcs and i think lenova or HP have larger keyboards than the dell.. asus now have chiclet keyboards tho (the macbook like ones) so i dunno if thats still true

try out the dells at officework

the new eeepc 1004dn has a DVD drive on it

or spend 3000 and get the carbon fibre vaio with bluray!

Ok a friend of a friend is selling a Dell 1420 (inspiron) 14 inch for $550.
its 1.5 yrs old apparently, has 2gb ram and 80gb hd.

I wanted to know if this is a good buy? I thought 80gb hd was a bit low... not sure though. Also, i assume it has windows vista...but i prefer xp... does anyone know how i might be able to circumvent this problem?

Not particularly. You could get a brand new Dell with much better specs for not much more that that.

yeah ok, thanks.... ive decided not to buy 2nd hand. I will buy 1st hand.

Does anyone know whether its "better" (not necessarily just cheaper) to buy from the computer company/manufacturer itself eg Dell or a retailer eg officeworks?

It's cheaper to by from Dell direct. Officeworks have to make a profit on whatever Dell charges them for stock, after all.

The MSI Wind is amazing, but you're delusional if you think the Dell line-up is bad - it's only slightly less awesome than the Wind.

Edit: Dell netbooks that is. I don't know anything about Dell notebooks.
