Thought i will try this and see where it went.
Disclaimer: This is an intellectual exercise only, its purpose is to determine the logical, moral and ethical grounds for laws regarding pornography. This is a debate, please keep an open mind and be willing to intellectually explore all aspects of discussion.

16 is the current legal age for sexual intercourse in Australia. At 16 you can also legally work, including acting.

Working in a pornographic movie or photo shoot or whatever is not prostitution, the law has defined it as acting. If so, why are there special constrictions on how old you should be to work in this industry?

Teenagers at 16 years of age can legally have sex, but they cant look at pictures of it. Doesn't this seem a bit stupid? two 16 year olds could be fucking each other and that's all perfectly legal, but if they take a picture of it they have committed a crime and will go to jail on pornography charges for 10 years.

Rules:
I am seeking intelligent debate only please, no statements of "OMG CAUZ ITS WRONG KK?" don't just state your 1 sentence opinion and think you have contributed. Also read the thread before you post, i am sick of long threads where the same issues constantly get rehashed because someone doesnt read over what has allready been said.

The legal age for pornography should be 69 years and above.
This way we can be sure the featured person cannot be a judged as a minor at all by appearance.

ZOMG CAUZ ITS WRONG kK?
I'm afraid I must fundamentally disagree with you.

On the topic of pornography, there are many natural scientists, and especially physicists, who continue to reject the notion that the disciplines concerned with social and cultural criticism can have anything to contribute, except perhaps peripherally, to their research. Still less are they receptive to the idea that the very foundations of their worldview must be revised or rebuilt in the light of such criticism. Rather, they cling to the dogma imposed by the long post-Enlightenment hegemony over the Western intellectual outlook, which can be summarized briefly as follows: that there exists an external world, whose properties are independent of any individual human being and indeed of humanity as a whole; that these properties are encoded in "eternal'' physical laws; and that human beings can obtain reliable, albeit imperfect and tentative, knowledge of these laws by hewing to the "objective'' procedures and epistemological strictures prescribed by the (so-called) scientific method.

Haha, yes pleeeease?

But seriously, I don't agree. Pretty much everyone I knew when I was 16, including myself was way too intellectually immature to make many decisions, as an example, a few people in my year level took the opportunity of turning 16 and being in year 10 to leave school, a decision they later really, really regretted. I can imagine so many girls going into the business for the quick, easy money, being exploited and then regretting it later in life.

I think he meant viewing pornography.

On the whole, I argue on side with religion. Pornography should never be legalised. It harms the perfect relationship that one can ultimately posses with God, through Jesus.

Working in the porn industry? Hell no. There's too much exploitation in that industry and with the digital age its becoming even more difficult to police so we shouldn't be dropping that age any further.

As for viewing ... I reaallllly don't see how someone who can legally be in a three way can be forbidden from watching a sex film. There shouldn't be anything stopping from 16 year olds from viewing it, not that it stops them right now, anyway.

16 year olds are not allowed to be signatory to any legally binding contract without a parents signature endorsing it, so they definitely can't be relied upon to make an informed and intelligent decision about whether to appear in pornography, something that has life long implications.

As for viewing, there should not be any age.

No, no, no.
Everything you said there is wrong for many reasons. Usually in the "grooming" phase pedos send porn to their prey in order to entice them into the idea of sex. Normally they may not have commited any crime up until the point where it becomes too late. So it's best if that law stays in place as a protection measure.

As to the thread. Sure, if they can get written consent from their legal guardians (if they are independant then it would not matter). They're old enough to have sex legally why should recording it be any different?

That's the poorest justification. People do all sorts of things in the process of "grooming". Are you going to ban all contact between adults and minors that could be associated with grooming? e.g. gift giving, conversation... grooming doesn't have to involve the exchange of pornography anyhow.

A 16 year old viewing and purchasing porn independent of adults harms no one.

Because they could be pressured into signing a contract by their legal guardian, unscrupulous adults taking advantage of minors.

Is 16 also an appropriate age to begin working as a prostitute in your opinion?

I agree with that. You said you thought it should be legal for any age to view pornography and I had to explain that could lead to much worse things.

Because they could be pressured into signing a contract by their legal guardian, unscrupulous adults taking advantage of minors.
That's no less possible today.

I really find prostitution to be abhorrent in general. Atleast with porn it's not as frequent and the porn stars can make a decent living. Prostitution is simply a way out of poverty and I find it disgusting.

I would be in favour of making prostitution illegal altogether.

Your reply is surprisingly reasonable! NCAP has never been so civil.

But at least they can't be pressured into signing a legally binding contract for sex on film.

While it can be horrifying for some, that is usually down to their personal problems and non-work related issues. Some can't get over the stigma attached to the occupation or enter the occupation for the wrong reasons. For others, they love it and it's a lifelong occupation. There's also a hell of a lot of money to be made, it's a decent living in any one's terms. I would leave the decision up to the workers. To each their own. Some women are naturally promiscuous and get great satisfaction out of it. Outlawing it often has negative impacts such as further marginalizing workers and reducing their willingness to seek support services.

An even better idea. Work alternatives! Fucking brilliant yeah? Low to medium-skilled manual labour with decent wages.

What are the current laws regarding prostitution? When is it legal/illegal?
