I was wondering, people keep mentioning how Billy Blue design courses are so expensive, so I thought some clarification would be nice.

http://www.billyblue.com.au/Design-Dates-and-Fees/default.aspx

Say I wanted to get a Bachelor of Design in Multimedia Design: $16400 + $16400 (both years for the Associate Degree), and + $17250 (third year) = $50050.
Is that correct?

Also, around how much does the B Design in Vis Comm (UTS) course cost? I can't really seem to find information on that.

Well, while we're here, how do these two courses rank up against? i.e. B Design in Multimedia Design from Billy Blue vs. B Design in Vis Comm from UTS? Opinions on the two schools and/or courses?

I'm still in Year 11, so I haven't really looked into this stuff. Please excuse me if I've totally misunderstood anything.

Generally speaking, if your subjects come under "Built Environment" and you get a Commonwealth Supported Place (HECS place) - you are looking at $7260 per year (for the full year i.e. 3 year Built Env degree = $21780).

If your subjects come under "Visual & Performing Arts" and you get a Commonwealth Supported Place (HECS place) - you are looking at $5095 per year.

They have a link to a fee calculator on that page if you want specifics for 2008. It'll most likely increase by the time you get there though.

holy shit 50k?!

jeez, I pay 7k a year for uni. Yes, on HECS (yeah i'm in band 3 of HECS scheme. IT is band 3, yeah?) I'm going for 3 years, so 21k

holy shit. Man, that is totally not worth it.

IF you go to Billy Blue, you get a diploma. If you go to UTS, you get a degree.

Employers prefer degrees.

That's enough incentive for most to go to UTS (and save some cash)

Sorry but no. I'm currently a 1st yr student at billy blue and im going to graduate with a degree not a diploma. 2008 1st semester students were the final bunch to be able to do the diploma course.

And for your information, we have fee-help so basically like HECs, they pay for you and you pay them back once you get a set income.

studied the diploma of digital media at TAFE for the last two years and it was only $1220 for the whole yr!! I learnt a lot, now I want a bachelor though and I am trying to find out whether to go to Billy Blue or UTS/COFA etc.... I can prob be exempt from a year at billy blue, not sure bout the others though I am 26 and want to get a move on out there in the work force, I did a lot of travelling b4.

If anyone else has nymore comments about if billy blue is actually worth paying all this money to it would be great to hear!

BTW - billy blue 'fee help' system is NOT as good as hecs! it says you have to pay them back 20% once you are earning money, hecs you pay only what you borrowed!

Is billy blue truly worth it?? What is UTS like?? how many years??

The 20% is a once-off loading, not compound interest. So if the course is $5000, you have to pay back $6000. On top of that is the yearly CPI increase (usually 3%-ish) but you get that one with HECS too, as cost of living increases.

Have you looked at CQU?
CQUniversity Student Handbook

Apparently...
Graduates of the Bachelor of Digital Innovation will find employment opportunities in the digital content industries, including:

•games design and development;

•multimedia/web design and development;

•interaction and information design;

•project management;

•creative online product researchers; and

•online education.

It is available by distance if you don't want to move. So is CSU's Graphic Design degree... http://www.csu.edu.au/courses/undergraduate/graphic_design/

USQ's Bachelor of Creative Arts majoring in Creative Media (Multimedia), also by distance I think, looks sort of ok.

Sorry to offend anyone but the truth is that places like Billy Blue and Shillington are not as highly regarded as places such as COFA and UTS in the design industry. Save your money, go to uni, get a degree which is more internationally recognised. Sure, go to a private college if you can't get the UAI and if you're fine working in a generally small studio when you graduate. The general consensus is if you want to work in one of the big Australian firms such as Frost, or overseas, go to uni.
