Someone tried to convince me that math was correct. I always have and always will call it maths.

Firstly, maths as someone has already stated is an abbreviation of mathematicS.
No one says "I will study mathematic"

Secondly, a more personal issue is speech. 'Maths' rolls of the tongue better than 'math'.

Mathematic is a description (a mathematic procedure)
Mathematics is the topic (procedure uses mathematics)


'Math' (non-american) sounds like its talking about a particlular instance or a singular of the plural mathS

We dont say were doing a 'legal study' course, its plural 'legal studies'.
Seems to be the same rule, just Americans are a lazy "individual" group
