Someone tried to convince me that math was correct. I always have and always will call it maths.

Firstly, maths as someone has already stated is an abbreviation of mathematicS.
No one says "I will study mathematic"

Secondly, a more personal issue is speech. 'Maths' rolls of the tongue better than 'math'.

Mathematic is a description (a mathematic procedure)
Mathematics is the topic (procedure uses mathematics)


'Math' (non-american) sounds like its talking about a particlular instance or a singular of the plural mathS

we had a massive discussion/argument about this in class
only a few months ago
and
we come the conclusion
its maths

how wierd does it sound when americans say math
like lindsey lohan in mean girls " I like math"
