I'm in Year 12 and i feel kind of confident that i would make it into Commerce at UNSW.. so i'm wondering whether it would be worth doing a combined degree with the normal commerce.. like science and engineering mainly.
I read something that it would differentiate me from the rest of the crowd and all that but would it really help me in the future?

Also would the engineering/commerce degree be worth the 5.5years compared with the commerce/science which is 4 years?
i mean if i chose a major in finance and did engineering would that end me at the same place i would be if i chose science? cause 1.5 years difference which is a long time..

engo is probably the most difficult combination you can choose. if you combine with something, it's obvious that you have a lot more career paths to choose from then straight commerce students. really it depends on what you want to do with your degree(s).

depends on your interests though engineering is best paired up with a finance major.

what do you mean by difficult combination? like the subjects are so different?

i'm interested in chemical engineering cause of the chemistry part of it and engineering has maths.. which i also like... compared with commerce which doesnt have any of that.

I think he means this

# hours of an engineering student = twice the # hours of a commerce student

but the subjects would be very different.

may I also advise you to not do a double degree for the wrong reasons, for example "just cause I can". it will make you more "employable" but it will take longer, I believe 2 years longer if you are moving from commerce to commerce/engineering. you will have knowledge in two different fields, but this comes at the sacrifice of having less knowledge in each of them compared to a straight commerce or straight engineering student. the core knowledge will be there but those straight student will have had electives and been able to augment their knowledge. its not a key aspect but if you are really interested in a subject, you wont get as many opportunities to pick electives and learn stuff that isnt core.

so weigh up your options. there are pros and cons. it will make a difference so dont consider it lightly.

you can of course change, the 1st year of a comm/eng program is all eng. so if you dont like it after the 1st year you can transfer out.

just some things to think about

The ATAR requirement for the combined degrees with commerce are equal i think so I dont really think of that.. its more of an interest level. i want to become a problem solver which is from doing engineering... but i also want to go into commerce.. so if it is going to take me another 2 years to become a "problem solver".. i may just forget it.. and just do a combined with science degree which i'm also interested in.. but now you tell me that the commerce degree people maybe better off doing a straight degree. regardless..thank you for the info...

and..If I was to transfer out after 1st year from comm/eng to just commerce would i have to reapply for uac or get a WAM of 75 or something.. to get in??
& If I was to do comm/eng or comm/science, I wouldnt be with the people doing the straight commerce degree would I? because i have some friends who are going to do straight commerce (Note: i'm not going to base my decision on my friends... if that thought went across your mind..)

I think you can drop from a double degree to a single degree at any point of time. In university the cohort is essentially the people who are doing the same subject say ECON1102 or FINS2642 or w/e. You will be in the same classes as the other commerce students who are doing the same subject ie commerce subjects.

yeah, i think that answered my questions. thanks

and I got one last question.. hopefully the last one.. how much group work is there in the commerce degree or is it all individual work for assignments and what not? like do you get to know people from your course well from lectures...?

you will be crying from the amount of group work that is involved. and undoubtedly, you will most likely talk to people in your tutorials and lectures.

In other words, you will be forced to socialise whether you like it or not.

I was at a group interview for a job a fortnight ago, and two of the guys sitting near me were doing commerce degrees at UNSW,

They said its a good idea to a combined dgree of sorts, because alot of the economic stuff, esp statstics and econometrics, and boring to death, so its worthwhile mixing it up with something interesting.
They also mentioned the workload's alright once you get out of first year, well, compared to law or med anyway...

hope this helps you in some way =P

The amount of group work is high, but the physical amount of work you have to complete, when compared to other degrees, is quite small for commerce.

I mean engineering as a degree is difficult due to the amount of classes and complexity of the subjects. But if you're seriously interested, go for it, that shouldn't hold you back.

I actually do the engineering/commerce degree and it is very true that engineering is a lot more difficult than commerce. If you do get into engineering/commerce i suggest you do all engineering subjects for the 1st year, and then from 2nd year onwards, mix it up each semester with commerce and engineering subjects. For pretty much all engineering students, your usually at uni 5 days a week. In a semester, if you did 1 commerce and 3 eng subjects, you may find that you have a day off as com subjects generally have less contact hours at uni.

One problem is that a combine commerce/law degree only allows you to do 1 commerce major and no minor or double major. So if you intend to be a commerce person this could be a problem. You should check whether other combines will have the same limitation.

Whats wrong with having no minor/double major?
Cant i just major in.. finance and major in something like chemistry.. for the science? or would that be something which would screw me up being a commerce person..

screwing me up meaning anything along the lines of not being selected for jobs.. being unemployed... being less wealthier.. less of a social life.. etc?

You can major in that way if it pleases you. I didn't say it will "screw" you and none of the problems you listed will necessarily arise as a result. You seem to have magnified what I intended to say.
The problem is just as it is, and it may not necessarily be a "problem" for everyone. It has been a problem for me personally since I have found interest in both accounting and finance, but if your interest lies in chemistry and finance and you want to pursue something in that area then having only one major in commerce shouldn't be a problem for you.
