i need some help. for next year's subjects i m taking:
standard english, 2 unit math, business studies, chemistry, biology.
as u can see these are only 5 subjects and we need 6.
are these subjects hard or easy?
economics, legal studies, society and culture and community and family studies.
which one do u recommend?
and which one is the easiest subject?

please let me know Wat u think.

Standard English isn't hard, but still it requires a considerable amount of work..
2 Unit Maths - well it varies with different people, but lots of people acheive band 6
Business Studies - I did this year; my advice? Don't choose it. Boring, repetitive and predictable. Went through the whole year with 2 hours of study.. basically did no homework as we had like 5 different teachers, and still achieved a decent mark of 87 and top a 5 ranking
Chemistry - I didn't do this subject, but if you found year 10 science hard.. don't choose chem. A difficult subject to grasp, rigorous work and high intelligence required.
Biology - Lots of theory work involved. Also a difficult subject and obviously, lots of work required. If you like the stuff involved [ecosystems, human body ..stuff] go ahead, you'll enjoy it.

Economics - The most difficult of the commerce subjects. I felt extremely confident in Economics theory and did well in short answers and multiple choice. Couldn't write economics essays for sh*t though, still can't. If you're gonna do this subject, read the paper!! Lots of work required.[ross gittons smh]

Legal Studies - A subject i'm doing right now. I found it pretty interesting, difficult it was not. I recommend it if you enjoy this field of study.. easy to achieve a good band, if you do some work. Essays form a big part of this subject [large references to legislation, + impacts]

Other subjects? never heard of.

legal scales better. Its also less work there is no major work and is alot more benneficial!

I disagree with you on this, i found legal to be the easiest subject i had during the HSC (and i did visual arts =/). Legal is simply mindless memorisation, there is zero analysis, you just spew out cases, legislation, media articles etc and that's it, full marks.

Society and culture actually requires you to use your brain, the whole course is based around the active application of concepts to different situations- there is no defined right answer that will give you the marks it all depends on the effort you put into making a seamless argument. Not to mention the major work in year 12, the PIP is not at all easy, it requires constant work throughout the year.

So yeah, i really wouldn't consider legal a difficult subject at all, which is great if you're just looking for an easy pass as the course can be pretty interesting if you get good modules (if you get stuck with something like shelters or workplace though, the year will be death).

It depends on the person. Generally, yes I have heard that most people find Legal quite easy. But to me, Society is easier. I don't have to work on it as much. Legal just doesn't sink into my head. Oh and Society is considered more of an easier subject than a harder subject, so...

I'm just going to say eco, highest scaling humanity I believe and its pretty fun IF you enjoy it like all subjects but srsly I think economics is the really worth it.

1. Learn some basic grammar rules. No 'n' in Society and culture, please.

It all depends on your abilities and interests. Talk to teachers, look at the syllabus. Ask past students. Having done all of those subjects at the preliminary level I can say that I enjoyed CAFS the most- but that is just me.

I hated Economics because it was piss easy, and therefore dropped it. It's basically Year 10 Commerce all over again.

Legal is good. And do higher subjects if you can - so take your 3 unit maths and EX1. If it's too hard, drop.

honestly, I wouldn't go for society and culture/community and family studeis. They can be very complicated. However, if you are good at writing essays and analyse informations, these subjects might be suitable for you.
For economics and legal studies, you still have to write essays, but they dont require as much English skills as the other two do.
So, take your time to decide.

Can I just say that if you are currently in year 10 then you can't comment- you've never done any of these courses!

Try looking in the HSC Exam Sections and general sections for each of these subjects to see what people say about them. Basically it all comes down to your interests.

supre, based on the subjects you have already chosen I feel that economics would sit best with your other social science subject, but if you want variety (which is always a good things) then consider CAFS or Society and Culture. I hated Legal Studies but that's just me.

If you have any envisionings of an ATAR of upwards of 90, I don't think Society and Culture is the way to do that, unless you have like 12 units so it won't be counted at all.

You should not choose subjects based upon how easy they are or how well they scale - read about the courses, look at some textbooks for the subjects, and maybe some prelim/HSC papers and then choose what interests you most.

i did cafs and legal. the whole bad scaling thing; i would basicaly just ignore it. i worried so so so much as to what cafs was going to do to my atar. ended up getting 96 in the HSC and an atar of 93.05 so it really didnt hurt my atar at all.
i would 100% recommend both these subjects especially to someone who prefers writing essays to solving problems. i enjoyed them both so much!

You may be doing 14 units, and it just so happens you may take S+C for it, but since it's scaled so low - it won't be counted, but super results in other subjects means you get a high aggregate and therefore a higher ATAR. So yes, you did do the subject, but the real point is "Will it be counted?" That's the question you should ask those girls who got 90+ ATAR, "Was it counted?"

S+C scales better than CAFS. i did CAFS and yes it 100% did count!! i did 11 units so they could have only used 1 unit of it. but they only used 1 unit of biology for me im guessing.

I would do legal or sac probably.
I wouldn't do chem or business.

You have a combination of hard and easy subjects which is good.
Just do the subjects you have a passion for.

I'm not sure whether or not to do maths. I don't have a passion for it, but I enjoy it sometimes. Do you think I should do it?

To the OP:
Of the subjects you listed (Economics, Legal, SAC and CAFS), I believe that CAFS is the easiest and Economics is the hardest. I wouldn't do Economics, myself, but that's because I think money (and subsequently, the economy) causes a lot of suffering and we would be better off without it (ie be self sufficient and not rely on shops - hunt and gather). You would probably enjoy it if you like learning about trade. Legal could be interesting! But if I had to choose one of those subjects, I would chose SAC (although there's a PIP in Year 12 which might annoy you).

Schoey, if you do Commerce - and do good in it, Economics will be piss easy. It was for me, it was like Year 10 Commerce all over again.

Also, you should do Maths - at least to try it out first, and see if it's suited to you. If not, then you can drop it, you have nothing to lose - except a few lost study periods.

maycat and possessionless... interesting. Let's just say, my mind is somewhat confused. Although I guess it proves the point that any combination of subjects can be successful, it's just the frequency of it.
