hmmmmmmm well to me, indie music is reptetive, boring, all the same, faggy (when the guys sing in high voices), soft, not something u can get into (ie; headbang ), and most of all pussy lol
(however i actually dont know wat truly classifies as indie music =S)

whereas metal is farken hardcoreeeeeeeee, full of passion, really skillful playing (depending on the band), something u can really get into

Yeah, I'm not dissing metal, because I do like some, just in small, small doses. A friend sent me a Child of Bodom song, I have been very traumatized since that experience so I think I'll stick to my Indie tunes. Speaking of Indie you all should check out The King and All of His Men by Wolf Gang...its sweeeeeeet.

The first bands to get me into sort of heavy music would've been Linkin Park and Incubus when I was of x years of age, and they're still good for a nostalgic listen. Then somebody showed me Dream Theater when I was 13 or so and I became an elitist wanker fanboy for them and became obsessed with musicianship, I think I might still be just a little. Then came Soilwork and I was like ooh yucky vocals and choruses and stuff and then blah blah Opeth, Death, Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah, "how kewl is grind".

I've actually only listened to one song of CoB and it tickled my fancy until I heard a really bad keyboard solo, so I stopped there. But yeah, probably a good place to start if you wanna get into extreme metal. Other bands I would really recommend for the same purpose would be Opeth; cool music, clean singing and growls where needed... shit's awesome.

I used to think the same thing until I heard Opeth. Before them I thought it was just rubbish noise made for no reason, but when I heard them I started to see the vocals as another instrument to accompany the music. If you think about it, with such heavy music playing could you really manage to put clean vocals over the top of it and make it sound musically valid? To me extreme vocals are the most logical choice.

Try Opeth if you haven't already and if you still can't take the vocals, watch 'til about 4:30 or so and hear him actually sing and it should soothe your ruffled feathers.

Do you remember what song? Most of their keyboard work is quite good. But that's of course, if your into keyboards in metal.

Yeah, it was Needled 24/7. I just listened to it then and the it's not the keyboard solo that was bad, I think it was just the synth effect they used to play it with turned me off. I think it was too 8-bit for my liking, hah. But without a doubt, Alexi can write heavy, catchy music.

Wow, never thought about it like that. Never thought I'd say this but you are right its only logical. Listened to that Opeth link too, I'm sorry but after 2 minutes I just had to close the tab. My music taste just doesn't extend to that genre. I don't get why some people can listen to such depressing lyrics, why is that? I suppose thats why I'm more drawn to Indie because of its light hearted lyrics for a happy little soul like mine

Yeah, I have a couple of their albums. Sure, I don't listen to them that much but when I do I do enjoy it, and you're right the 8bit keyboards strangely work really well in their music.

Glad you can see it like that too. That's ok, the majority of people probably would've closed it sooner, but did you fastforward to 4:35? It's just to show how metal doesn't have to be all about sounding as doom and gloom as possible. His singing voice is really unbelievable, I didn't believe it was the same guy doing the growls for a while. You'll find that fans of Opeth and bands alike also like the mellow sections just as much as the heavy ones. A lot of people think metalheads are one track sorta people; not always the case.

Hmm, depressing lyrics? Just because the lyrics are sung in an aggressive fashion doesn't always mean the lyrics are depressing. A lot of bands will sing of their homeland's folklore and legends, science fiction, space, vikings, pirates and everyday stuff and will still use that growl, scream or a shriek.

Whilst both bands use harsh vocal technique, their lyrics tell of either pirate exploits or fantasy. The music is also pretty up-beat and uplifting, with cool "epic" sounding leads and melodies.

I guess life experiences and personalities are what would determine someone to listen to more aggressive music or more aggressive lyrics. The same way you're drawn to indie for it's light-heartedness because you're a light-hearted person.

i was introduced to Rage Against the Machine when i was like 12, and they quickly became my fav band. After then i got into punk bands like napalm death and infest (well from the info u gave in ur "hardcore punk" thread i classify them as punk now ) when i was like 13-14. I then started listening to thrash metal bands like megadeth, slayer and anthrax, when i was like 15-16 and now listen to death metal bands and melodeath bands xD
