Because Perishables contains non-dairy lines; frozen fish, frozen vegetables, pasta and juice can hardly be considered "dairy". Grocery, while occasionally known as "longlife", is actually only one part of longlife; General Merchandise (eg. DVD's, other seasonal lines like manchester etc.) also falls under the technical definition of "longlife". Produce contains flowers as well as nuts and other things which aren't fruit nor vegetables. Frontend covers things other than just checkouts, for example trolleys, amongst others.
While the common-place, non-Woolworths definitions may seem to be more logical, when you get to know the departments and its intricacies, you'll realise why Woolworths uses the terms it does.

And I totally wound up the hero by cutting 28 hours out of my Sunday roster and adding only 8 of them back in!

ive been working for woolworths for nearly 2 years.
They came to my school when i was in yr 11 in the begining of the year asking young people to do a group interview because a new shopping scntre was being built right across the road from our school. Only 20 people got accepted to work there out of a group of 60.
I have to say I don't mind working at Woolworths. Sometimes you get rude/mean supervisors (and i know there only doing their job but they coulld be just a bit more nicer though over all pay if fine and if ur casual be prepared to get lousy shifts from time to time, but being a student and working there has given me a blt up of saving which will benefit me when school finished.

It gets even more confusing when you transfer stores because a lot of the older stores tend to keep tradition of using old dept names and newer ones name them the new ones.
Also out of interest how are your notes/coins arranged in your tills? Maybe I am a bit obsessive compulsive but I have to have my notes and coins arranged highest to lowest left to right. At my current store the coins are arranged left to right $2 to 5c, but the notes are arranged $5 to $50 instead of $50 to $5. Its just really annoying because in four stores I have worked in half are opposite. So whenever I use a till where I am at the moment it feels weird giving out change and sometimes I have to rearrange the notes just to make it feel right.
Ours are left to right $2 - 5c but the notes depend on what register u are on. $5 notes are closest to the customer. So on register 4 at my store its $5 - $50 but on register 5 it would be $50 - $5 (left to right)

Its so that the in the morning, office staff can instantly spot a service till compared to a liquor till. But it really screws me over doing spotchecks and pickups in cash office (coz I don't spend any time in liquor).
Just to confuse you even more, liquor are arranged 50 to 5.

Shocking last night at work from 4:30-7 we were INSANE!, my god for a monday jeez. could have been cos of school returning today.
It's a security thing. If a customer leans over to rob the till, the $50 are the furthest away.
Got a question if anyone knows the answer. What's woolworths policy on doing payouts for unused holiday time? I've been working there for 2 years and have barely used any holiday time. I've got like 250 hours built up and probably won't ever be using it all. I'm thinking about asking my manager if i can just get paid out for it.
Will woolworths do a lump-sum payment for unused holiday time? or will they only do that when you leave and have unused time left over?

I very very much doubt it. I know that one of our nightfillers has asked about this before and been told flat out no. IIRC there is actually a part in the new agreement that says the company will not pay out unused leave entitlements until you leave.
lol, I wish I had that problem - As of next week I'm back to 0 annual leave accrued. (well actually I might not be, neither my CSM or SSM will sign my leave forms, despite the fact that its been sat there for six weeks).
funny part is that i recently dropped down to part time to start uni (18 hrs a week).
If i went on holiday now, i'd still be on leave 13 weeks later. I'm never going to get rid of this holiday time by using it.
I suppose it doesn't matter that much. I'm not really planning on staying at woolies for too much longer anyway so i'll be getting paid out for it one way or another.

So, say you are working a specific job, say longlife, pershiables, produce or nightfill. Is there any chance you will still be able to use the registers. It looks fun and i wouldnt mind doing both and im good with monet and calculating...

Of course. There was a point when I was doing Produce, Grocery and Checkouts, so it's definitely possible. Now whether your 'home department' manager is cool with it, is a different thing. But definitely bring it up with him/her, and also talk with the checkout manager.
Really? you should be getting regular payrises from the agreement. Probably not very noticable to a part timer, but for us, every 6 months we got an extra .40 an hour.
If the national agreement passes then we've only got a fortnight til the new rules are to be put in place. wow.
(assuming your states agreement has already expired._)
I'm only a part timer now, i was full time & then some (6 x 9 hour shifts a week) for most of the 2 years.
I haven't been told about or seen any increases in my pay over the years. I suppose it's possible they slipped in without my noticing. It's hard to tell exactly since my shift goes 11pm-8am, it falls over the night shift rate times.
