I wanted three monitors. My graphics card only has two outputs. So install another graphics card. Simple. Many others have done the same. Problem. My motherboard only has one PCIe x16 slot.

The two PCIe x1 slots caught my gaze, they stared mockingly at me and then turned to each other and laughed. I stared back enviously, for all intents and purposes they were useless. Suddenly, a spark of imagination riveted my attention...

PCIe is a serial interface. Theoretically a PCIe x16 graphics card should work in a PCIe x1 slot amirite? Problem. A PCIe x16 card doesn't physically fit in a PCIe x1 slot. The solution was obvious. Modify it.

So I got a soldering iron and...

Plastic fumes make my lungs go owwie...

But then my graphics card wouldn't fit because the battery was in the way...

Easily fixed though...

Nope...

Still stuck on two monitors :(

Umm, not sure about the theoretical capabilities of PCIe, but the practical side of me is saying "Why the hell did you think all those contacts were connected to the circuit board if they weren't needed for anything?"

LOL! I fucken LOLED. How you wrote this made it even funnier.

Whats wrong with one monitor?

Dude some info when I bought my card: The PCIE x16 uses 75 volts(on the PCIe 16, rest comes from battery pack). By the looks of it, the smaller ones are like...totally inadequate.
Creative ideas, but you shouldn't chop pieces of hardware. They won't function properly, or not even function at all. Like fitting a firewire into a usb port. I doubt cutting it would work.

What a waste of a graphics card. That better be an old one.

More desk space.

All of the power is supplied by pins 1-11. Also, the fan spins up so I think it gets enough power.

But... IEEE 1394 and USB are totally different...

This should theoretically work since PCIe is a serial bus, I think it has something to do with my motherboard not supporting more than one graphics card...

lol it was a 8600 GT.

Ya I just read that stuff now. That's pretty cool. But wouldn't you notice a drop in performance if the 8600 was in pcie 16x?

It won't be doing any graphics processing, all the graphics work will be done by the main card (9800 GTX+).

Yar, two monitors just isn't enough :(

My PC was $1000 two years ago but it's worth like $200 now.

What do you mean 200.
Mine was 1500 and if you're right, compared to yours it's probably worth 100

I'm pretty sure the average no. of monitors is somewhere between 0.99 - 1.3

Just tested the 8600 GT in the PCIe x16 slot. Doesn't work. I think it was already dead.

From the picture above, a small portion of the actual chip was broken off.

And you can live with 1 monitor...Evidence:I haven't had any effects yet.
