So if all goes well, I'll be getting an offer for B Sc (Adv Maths)/B Comm. at UNSW in the Early February Round. Hitherto, I've been quite lax on deciding on what Commerce major I want to complete.

Now since double major's are not available in that program - I have to pick one. Thankfully, I've narrowed it down to two majors for each degree.

For B Sc (Adv Maths):
- Applied Mathematics
- Statistics

For B Comm:
- Financial Economics
- Finance

How did I do this? Loaded up every single specialisation page and determined what I wanted (or in this case, did not want) by looking at the descriptions of study and some of the course names - because they are often descriptive enough.

Job-wise, I'm... not exactly fussy - as long as it pays well, right? =P

More seriously, I'd like to keep options open - that's why I did the Commerce component. Econometrics is like... applied maths to business stuff isn't it? So would you say that if I was to take econometrics - that would be a tautology of sorts, akin to Quant. Risk and Actuarial?

Though with respect to what I said above, would it be perhaps better to not do Commerce at all and double major in Applied Mathematics and Statistics? (though if I don't get the offer for the double degree - I'll just do that)

Also, to help mitchy_boy and others - are there hot chicks in Commerce?

Well, I remember I made, or commented on, a UNSW v Sydney thread before because I was torn between the two. Someone said "A university that looks like something from Harry Potter, or Beijing? I know which one I'd pick".

Edit: That "someone" is NewiJapper!

Econometrics is apparently kinda like Actuarial, or Quant, but they use stats to model the economy, but the quant skills you learn can translate into heaps of disciplines.

Do you have to choose majors straight up in the double? Do the core subjects and see what you like, cos after doing some of the stuff in first year you might learn more about either finance or financial eco (same with applied math or stats)...

And I'm not too bothered if there isn't an abundance of stunners. I have pretty average(weird) standards...

I hope that the Econometrics can be translated into awesomeness in Quantitative Risk! Just to keep options open.

But apparently we have to choose our majors right now because each major has their own 'core' topics which we have to do in First Year, from what I can gather.

And mitchy_boy, as I said - we'll go roaming around and I'll point out girls I think you may have a chance with. And give you explanations (because I'm a science/maths student and if I'm going to say something like that - I'll always have an explanation...). It's a sciency-thing to do. =P

But they won't be in the subject, they'd just be walking around.

sorry fellas but this is how it goes from the order of hot babes, usyd, uts, uws, macquarie and then unsw. so basically choosing unsw is like saying you want to turn out gay.

I'd pick finance because I don't like maths that much (and finance is qualitative as well as quantitative), and financial economics sounds rather waffly and likely to be very heavy on stats (which I hated). I could be wrong though.

One thing to remember is economics in uni is 100x harder than high school. I enjoyed it in high school but hated the prospect of it in uni once I had sat in on lectures.
