Hello all, I hope your exams are going well.

A friend of mine is in a bit of a pickle. He took a TVET course while he was in Year 10 supposedly "worth two units." He used that two units after he had chosen his subjects. After a couple of days he found out from a call that the course was not worth two units. Now he only has 11 units (not the required 12). So now he is on the roll for truanting. So anyone have any advice on what he should do next?

P.S: He plans to argue hard with the head teacher about it.

I don't think there's much he can do. It's beyond the head teacher's control IMO because the board of studies requires that we complete 12 units before starting year 12. So... there's nothing this "head teacher" could do really. Even if the head teacher agrees with him, ultimately he's still a unit short. Can he just pick up a one unit subject like religion or something?

There is always the option of going back to multimedia but he does not like it.

I tried telling him that.
So... what does he intend to do? Argue with his head teacher, piss his head teacher off and then what? :p
It's not as if the head teacher is going to go to the board of studies or whatever and plead to them, begging that they should make his one unit subject into a two unit subject? The chances of that happening is like astronomical.
If I were him, i'd accept my mistake, call tafe and give them a 49584035803 hour long rant of how they've screwed me up, then move on with life and pick up multimedia :p He could always drop it in year 12 anyway.

What TVET course did he do? I haven't heard of a TVET course worth 1 unit unless you count a specialisation in a particular subject.

Digital Design Fundamentals I think. Apparently our Year 10 year adviser said it was worth 2 units. However when the teacher checked the system it didn't count.

I am not sure if that is the exact name but it was somewhere along the lines similar. He did this course instead of work placement.

If he didn't do the mandatory work placement for the TVET course then I don't think the course can count towards your units or something.

I can only find Design Fundamentals. Did your friend do the mandatory work placement? It should count as 2 units as it's a Content Endorsed Course.
Oh sorry Jules, did you mean the work placement in that course? I don't think it's the right course.

Edit: It says the same code on his certificate. It could be right.

Yes, most TVET courses have mandatory work placement. It's different to work experience in year 10. If it's the same code then it's the same course. He needs to talk to his careers advisor & the TAFE TVET person about his situation.

That's what I told him or tried to at least. Thanks Jules, he's showing that website to the head teacher tomorrow.

I wouldn't speak to the Head Teacher about it unless they have experience with handling TAFE/VET stuff. He'd be better off going to the Deputy Principal or the careers advisor about it because they have more experience in dealing with this stuff.
