The PhD - Doctor of Philosophy - is the doctoral degree given for most disciplines such as Science, Engineering, Economics, Arts etc. A PhD does not mean the holder obtained a doctorate in Philosophy. There are also other doctoral degrees like: Doctor of Divinity, Doctor of Music, Doctor of Dentistry - these are usually the equivalent of the PhD for the respective disciplies. A Doctor of Science (DSc) is generally higher than a PhD and is usually awarded for outstanding contribution to the advancement in a Science discipline be it Geology, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry etc etc.

But don't do a PhD if you want to be rich.
