Do you? I'm pretty sure you do., because I saw a show in the states, and they had a ranking system for uni. If so, how important is it?

As far as I know, We haven't been ranked, or given our ranks or for that matter ranks dont even count.

The uni might rank us, but that's not something students are given and it doesn't matter. Just do well, in the end it's your marks and skills that matter not ranks.

Isn't it just GPA
GPA is just an average of how you're doing, not a rank for students.

Umm, no. Unless you're in one of those silly American universities who insist in having a set percentage of people pass - then yes, you would.

Pretty sure that was if you get the top exam mark for an exam you're ranked first for it. lol.

I think the university does rank students in some way internally in subjects, if only to determine who tops a subject and gets a prize. However you only know if you get the prize, thus topping the subject.

In a way, at usyd in any case, law students are ranked when they graduate - if only by WAM (average of all law marks). This is used to determine who gets the University Medal (the highest wam), and anyone with an average over 75 gets 1st class Honours. Every person who graduates is listed by student number and wam on the university website, so you can effectively find out what you were ranked...

I believe with the new JD at usyd, because there is no honours with the JD, the law school can supply you with a letter when you graduate telling you what rank you got (supposedly so that you can use this rank to inform potential employers - ie. I can't get honours, but I was ranked x).

For the exam yes, but not for that course/subject. It's possible to top the course without topping the exam, because the mark is based on more than one assessment.
