Actually, yes they do. If you look at school websites, they advertise when they get lots of students above 90 and shit. So, I'm gonna say they do know your ATAR.

They do NOT receive your ATAR. They will be able to see your HSC Marks however.

Yeah they get your HSC results, i remember the teachers in the common were discussing people's marks and etc. Our school posts the top marks up also on the buildings after a few days or weeks also.

People did. Some guy tried lying at my school to get 3rd in the grade [and hence tried to get the prize for third]. But the schools have all the marks, and they generally have an idea of who duxed and whatnot.

Schools no longer receive the ATAR. We used to get the rank but after the Telegraph ran a front page story along the lines of 'The School were everyone failed - highest TER (as the ATAR was called at the time) 48.xx' the government stopped schools getting the ranks so taht students now have to tell the school their final rank.

You don't have to tell anyone your ATAR at all, if you don't want to do so.

Pretty silly system - since the HSC marks basically give you the ATAR if you use ATAR calculators, so they can get a pretty good guess.

nope school do not get your atar like Cem explained why.

That's why my school doesnt use ATAR to calculate dux, they use dux based on HSC marks and then estimate what you would actually have received. Usually they are quite spot on however, I know there were a few years where dux had 2nd highest ATAR/UAI and 2nd had the highest ATAR/UAI. Although a potential reason is that English is not a necessary component at my school for comparing dux whereas UAC does for ATAR. My school uses the student's best 10 units and does not have to include english.

our dux is based on school/internal assessment marks not hsc lol (I dunno how they do the estimates or consider the different weightings)

so basically the dux gets announced a week before hsc results come out... sometimes dodgy when the dux doesn't do so well externally

My school doesn't use ATAR to determine Dux either. No, school does not know ATAR unless they ask you.
