MATH1151 and MATH1141 are different courses. You'll probably find MATH1141 harder, I'd wager.

I was under the impression you *had* to do MATH1151 if you're actuarial.

You can't do 1141 with 2U, and in any case you would have the same problem. They can let people do 1131/1231 instead of 1151/1251 - check your course office. I think that people who start midyear need to do this anyway.

You should also think about whether you are in the right degree...how are you doing in the other courses?

i assume ur first yr commerce student wanting to do actuarial, if u want to do actl1001 nxt sem u need to have done 1151 because it includes stats that is only covered in 1241/1231 and u will be at a severe disadvantage especially because u did only 2u aswell. if ur struggling in 1151 u should probably drop ur actl major, math1151 is nothing compared to actuarial and its better to drop now and save ur wam then to continue till 2nd/3rd year then drop.

People, some of my friends too, who did 4U and did reasonably well (band 6) are struggling at the moment, I'm okay so far but tbh I don't think 2U is cut out for it :S

You can always drop down if you're not that set on actuary

2U are fine for 1131/1141 as long as they work hard. 1151 I don't know, it can't be much harder than 1141 though.

well i do 1151. we have the calculus notes for 1141. so i think they are similar in difficulty and some content.

I think that what can potentially make 1151 difficult is that it doesn't have its own dedicated course notes, and even most of the problems in the 1151 booklet seem to be designed for 1131/1141 so it's all sort of patched together. Certain topics, like several variable calculus, are just tacked on to the end of the semester and are only covered in lectures where Dr Tran will probably succeed in confusing the fucking hell out of you if you've skipped a class.

If you're not accustomed to the workload of uni, 1151 could really kick your arse. I hadn't done any maths for years when I took it and for a long time I was very worried about even passing. But I worked hard and got a good mark in the end thanks to scaling.

I'd say if your heart is set on actuarial and you are willing to put the effort into it then you should persist. Otherwise, you have to ask yourself if there's any point.

2U isn't really fine for 1131/1141. People have passed it with that background, but they assume that you have done 3U so you have to work really hard (and be OK at maths). For 1141 or 1151 they pretty much assume you have done 4U, so it isn't surprising the OP is finding it hard.

1151 has more stuff in it than 1141. The lecturers say that it is harder, but it doesn't really matter much as they scale them both at the end. I think that they make 1151 hard to weed out people how aren't going to cope with actl.
