I have 12 Units as of right now.

I've done two tests so far for 4 unit Maths, latest one being the half yearly. I scored bottom 10 out of the 40 students that do it in my class, from what I recall, the weighting for each test was 30% and 15% internal marks, hence I still have 55% worth of test marks in which I can catch up on, however I find myself hard to concentrate and understand 4 Unit Maths in general. I have a Maths tutor for 4 U maths and we've basically gone through all the topics however, my test results are very low, I believe I am ranked 30/40 in Maths Ext 2 for my year. I think I would have a higher mark also in my 3 U if I dropped 4 unit which has been so far satisfactory.

If it matters, the other subjects I do are:

Legal
Economics
English
Physics

I've achieved above average results for all those subjects however I am only slightly if not average for 3 Unit and well below average for 4 Unit.

Should I just drop down to 3U from 4U?

Since I've gone so far, should I really drop 4U?

In terms of scaling, is it better to be ranked around 35/40 in Maths Extension 2 or 40-50/150 in 2 UNIT Adv Maths? I am ranked 30/90 in Maths Extension 1.

Please answer my questions with reason so I may look at this from a different perspective.

if you've given it your best shot, but if you feel you cant cope with the pressure then drop 4 unit. Its really up to what you want to do ?

I reckon you should keep it as there is not much time left anyway.

do you feel overwhelmed right now? if you don't, then keep it. my friend was in the same position as you. he thought he was doing really bad in 3u maths so he ended up slacking off completely right up until hsc. who knew, his 3u marks ended up counting as one of the 10 units.

Brooo listen... Dont drop it... No matter what.. Doing 4 unit will make u understand 3 unit better... Trus me bro.. My mate got 57 in 4 unit and 2 band 4's and one band five and got 82 in 3 unit and got 90 atar.. So imagine if u get like 85 in 4 unit.. 90+ in 3 unit.. And the rest band 5's...(depending on your subjects) its a definite 95+

THIS.

Fuck.

Doing 4U just makes 3U seem easier so you do better in it.

It's the Cheerleader Effect in action.

Please don't drop it.

I came last in a few tasks and least in my school with 78 and it was still my second best scaling subject after 90 in 3U.

Please don't drop it.

You'll regret it.

In terms of HSC mark:

- Imagine you got 85 in everything except 4U which you got 60 - Legal Studies wouldn't count and you will get ~93.8 ATAR.
- The raw mark for 60 HSC Mark in 4U is immensely low - probably 20%.
- To get the same ATAR as 60 in 4U, you need ~86-87 HSC mark in 2U which is probably ~70% raw mark.
- Even then, the 60 is an extreme case, you will probably get at least 70 in 4U if not 75+ and so, you'd need a much higher 2U mark to match (perhaps 85% raw/~93 in 2U).

Verdict: It's probably best to keep 4U in terms of ATAR.

THIS!

55/120 RAW (79 HSC mark) in 4U was the same as 90/120 (90 HSC mark) in 2U last year.

BUT remember that 3U counts for two units if you do 4U!!

I was in a similar situation last week, and I do practically the same subjects as you expect I did Chemistry instead of Legal. I was coming last in my grade for 4U but relatively well for 3U. And around average for everything but English (I was way off average). If you drop 4U you get more time to focus on your other subjects, you are better off using your extra free periods than just sleeping in your 4U classes (I did that)
Have a chat with your deputy if your reports haven't come out yet. I had one with mine and it became so much more clear what the best option was.
In the end it comes down to whether you need 4U in a course you want to do uni, or to maximise your ATAR. In my case I wanted to maximise my ATAR.

Do you need 4U for uni?
If not, drop it straight away unless you are going to succeed
Then you will fund 3U much easier
