As a current year 12 student, I'm still in the process of choosing universities and courses. I have a strong interest in psychology so I've decided on doing that, but I'm not sure which of the three listed universities offers the best in psychology. Sydney University seems to maintain a high standard of it, while I've also heard that Macquarie University is excellent in the discipline of psychology and UNSW is overall good at the sciences. I'm currently leaning on USyd considering the convenience of it and its reputation, but I need to know which of the three universities is the best when it comes to psychology.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, UNSW, by any stretch. Best at science, most grants etc., best lecturers, <2000 in a lecture in first year (check USyd), no quota on honours (but a pretty tough threshold to get in), most flexible course (BPsychSc), highest ATAR for the BPsych, but options in BPsychSci and BSc. MAQ isn't even in the running.

From reading around, I've heard that mac is a really good university for psychology. I want to get into psychology as well, completing a major and master... All unis offer this but... I think i'll put mac on first preference, then unsw cause I've heard sydney is scrap for psych

Mac has the best reputation with employers.

USyd has a huge cohort in first year, but once you get past that, their teaching standard is excellent and they have fantastic lecturers. They also offer 10 different specialty areas in third year (more than UNSW or Mac from what I've heard). USyd has also recently been given some extra grants for psych, and there's a new mental health/diabetes/blahblah centre being opened in the next 18 months which will provide some great training opportunities for those interested in going into clinical, or health psychology.

edit: Don't go by what you've heard. Especially from first or second year students. Go to the different websites and have a look at the psych programs offered, or email/call/book an interview with people from that subject area at the uni.

I've heard that Macquarie is good with psych, I won't deny that, and employer reputation is also good but its reputation only seems to be restricted to the national level. Call me picky or elitist, but I don't want to be stuck in Australia for the rest of my life and choosing a university with international reputation would let me see the world like I want to. I also won't deny that UNSW is alright for psych, but the general trend seems to be that USyd is better for science than UNSW, and the psychology department at USYD ranks 11th in the world, which is fairly impressive.

This is a fairly old thread. I mean, I made this thread last year and I've already made my choice with uni. But I guess it'll help people who are still thinking.

Macq has a Honours program with an entry of 94 ATAR, I think the original program is around 80~ish ATAR.

At the national level, Macquarie is better for psychology, but if you want to do psychiatry, then UNSW is better (psychiatry is like psych but has other requirements, i.e. requiring to have done a bachelors degree).

USYD has the best international reputation, UNSW is almost as good as USYD. But on the other hand, Macquarie ain't as well known as the other two.

Ultimately, it all depends on what and where you want to work for. You should consider this when making a decision.

Don't you need a degree in medicine to be a psychiatrist?

I think so, that is probably a part of the requirement. But I'll have to ask someone about it.
It's pretty much the essential requirement. Psychiatrists are doctors who specialise in mental illness, so a degree and completion of specialisation is required to become a registered psychiatrist.
