Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has been accused of ignoring facts for political gain after describing the energy regulator's position on what is driving power prices as a "furphy".
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has threatened to take action against the states unless they bring down electricity prices.
She says households have experienced 50 per cent price increases over the last four years, "linked to demonstrable inefficiencies in resource allocation in the market".
Ms Gillard received the backing of Australian Energy Regulator chairman Andrew Reeves, who agreed over-investment had pushed up prices.
"The price increases up to 1 July this year were substantially attributable to increasing costs of the network," Mr Reeves said.
Earlier this week, Opposition energy spokesman Ian Macfarlane admitted the states had been price gouging.
[h=2]'Absolute furphy'[/h]However, speaking to the ABC Radio's AM program this morning, Mr Abbott again blamed the carbon tax for putting pressure on power bills.
"The problem is not the regulation of power prices. The problem is the carbon tax putting up power prices," he said.
"This is a fabrication by the Prime Minister. This is an absolute furphy from the Prime Minister.
"Why should we believe the Prime Minister now about so-called gold plating of power infrastructure when she's never talked about it for the last five years?"
Mr Abbott defended investment in electricity infrastructure.
"It's very important that we have security of energy supply and I don't think any rational power supplier would be overdoing it," he said.
"They would be putting in as much investment as is needed to ensure that they properly do their job."
[h=2]'Scaring the community'[/h]Greens leader Christine Milne says Mr Abbott is the one making things up and is ignoring facts for political gain.
"The pendulum of credibility has swung to the red flashing emergency zone pointing straight at Tony Abbott," she said.
Senator Milne says Mr Abbott's tactics have been exposed.
"He doesn't care. He doesn't want to be across the detail. All he wants to do is try to get into power by scaring the community," she said.
Climate Change Minister Greg Combet agrees Mr Abbott is being deceitful.
KMs Gillard says the rises cannot continue and has challenged the states to come up with ways of reducing power prices, or else.
"We won't lightly use the big stick of regulation, of stronger powers for the Energy Regulator and the ACCC, but it's a stick we hold and which we'll use if required," she said.

I think it's more upsetting that ignoring facts actually gets you political gain

To many old people who have screemed about the carbon tax and were proven wrong , do they ignore the facts and keep making trouble , if it's not " the carbon tax is going to hurt families" , it's " we were lied to about this tax ", it's funny that all they focus on has been done themselves , polices will say they'll do one thing and then do another. And liberals I think do t more than labor .

The infrastructure has been poorly maintained, especially around some of the higher using suburbs around Sydney. Old, poorly maintained infrastructure = higher operation costs (though, this is mainly the fault of Energy Australia (now TRU Energy), Country Energy and Integral (both Origin) and other default providers).

Gillard has good reason to push the retailers, the prices are indeed ridiculous. For some there was a ~20% rate increase in 2011/12 with no obvious viable explanation.

Wasn't the Carbon tax designed to target heavy users and/or higher income/businesses? It shouldn't have inspired a rate hike.

Question mark placed because I myself am not entirely confident with my knowledge of the Carbon tax (I never dealt with the specifics at work - elaboration/explanation welcomed), but a (kind of vague) extract from wiki:

The Australian carbon tax is directly aimed at major emitters (top 500 polluters in the country) as they are expected to have capital investment capabilities to improve technology and reduce carbon creation. The income tax threshold has been increased for all individual taxpayers as a compensation for price increases to all end users, although middle range tax rates were increased to the point where only individuals earning less than $80,000 per annum received any income tax relief.
In essence, the amount of impact to "normal" Australian homes should be minimal, but my bet is that the retailers will and possibly are taking advantage of it.

It's my understanding that in WA the electricity prices have been rising uncomfortably quick so as to reach the actual cost of production. This was meant to happen gradually under the last Labor government through a bipartisan agreement struck between both major parties, irrespective of who was in power, on which Labor reneged, so as not to upset the Westralian ~battlers~.

Now Barnett has been pumping it up to cover cost, and McGowan is - shamelessly - calling him a c*^t on it, Gillard is calling him a c*^t on it, and Abbott is fudging the blame onto the carbon tax.

The carbon tax is negatively affecting families and those worst off, such as pensioners.

Learn to spell his name correctly. It is Abbott, not Abbot as you said.

No it's not. Retailers using it as an excuse to raise the rates and not be blamed, is.
